??MossRoad, did you relocate a skunk????
I was trying to trap the groundhog in my garage and got that instead. Took a gamble of letting it go. I think we were both winners, as it lived and I didn't get sprayed. It was way more of a thrill than any slot machine or lottery ticket I ever played.

Glad it worked out, but why would she not come back, again???. Do you feed a cat? Skunks, raccoons and possums like the thought of a catfood meal?

Tunica was a fishing camp landing before the casinos landed there. Massive jobs and construction of many resturants and Hotels..One farmer sold over a Million Dollars in DIRT to build up an area...Several other followed suite on dirt sales..The town and county have benefited a huge amount..It nearly starved the DogTrack Gambling right across the river from MEM. None of them are native controlled that am aware of. I have visited some others that were controlled by them..

Do you remember when the first one Splash opened? That was a hoot.
Picture a steel building built on top of a barge and tied to the bank. You had to buy a ticket to get in and there would be a line a mile long just to buy a ticket. It has changed since then for sure.

They've got slots and video gambling at the dog track in West Memphis now. We never play there, but if I'm lying I'm dying the best steak dinner in 3 states is at the dog track upstairs.

It is interesting to find out how the slots can be set to increase or decrease the house's percentage. What I learned from a friend of my father who was a floor man in Vegas back in the 70's is that it's not always as easy as "tightening" the machines to increase house revenues. In some cases, the house will make more money in the long run by "loosening" the machines so patrons get higher payouts and more often. Word gets out, more people come in to play, and then the gross goes up, taking more to the bottom line. A lot of math and science goes into it.

Not only can they do it but the payout percentage is regulated by the State, in NV I think it is 75% payout. I don't know if they still do it but I remember billboards in Vegas touting casino's slot payouts "98% Payout on Slots!" etc.

Why take up skydiving, race car driving, or other means of living on the edge when you can trap and release skunks?

Wana try 2 for 2?

Yeah, I'd do it again. I didn't get sprayed. It was exciting.

Just an update...now they are proposing building a casino on the site of the nearly vacant factory outlet mall 3 miles west of us. It is one of eight sites being proposed by a group who wants to launch a campaign that would permit voters in Michigan to let the group build casinos. Needless to say, the group is mainly composed of former politicians and business owners...and I am sure many of the sites being proposed are owned by the group members.

One of my friends asked me if I wanted to go to the casino during a cruise we were on. I reluctantly agreed as it was a slow sea day with not much to do. I walked by the roulette wheel and noticed that the last 7 balls were all even numbers so I placed a $100 bill on odds. I won. I picked up my $100 winnings and started to leave. My buddy asked me "why are you going to quit while you are winning?" I answered "It's a lot better than quitting when you are losing."

Friend of mine once told me the closest he ever came to winning big money gambling was almost marrying a very elderly widow who was filthy rich , 32 years older than him, and was not requesting he sign a pre nup ! ;)

Adding to previously posted sayings about gambling:

In the long run, "If the gamblers could beat the house....there wouldn't be a house!!"

and state (gov.) run gambling: "A voluntary tax on the mathematically challenged."

Exactly. So to answer the original question: NO, no-one has ever made money gambling in the long run. You will ALWAYS lose if you continue to play. You can have short term gains, and IF you have the brains to stop and take your winnings, then fine, but if you continue to play you WILL lose.

I gambled one time in Vegas, playing blackjack.

I won $20.

That's it other than the money I lost at the chuch block parties I played as a kid on the $1 roulette wheel. Still remember the money the money being worth the excitement watching that wheel. Ironic that the church was running it LOL

My mother in law does very well at the casinos. They leave the house with $100. She only puts $5 bill into a machine, and only plays .30 cents a spin. If the machine doesn't hit, she moves along. If it hits, she sits there and plays. She gives my father in law $50 and he loses it all. 9 times out of 10, she'll come home with $150+. So even though he lost $50, she won $100 and they come out ahead. We'll sit right next to her, and lose all night long.

She gets all kinds of free stuff from the casino, too. Free appliances, housewares, complementary rooms. Heck, she walks up to the pit boss and asks if she can have food money. He swipes her card and her husband's cards and puts $30 for food on each of them, and then they'll take us to dinner.

She is the only person I know that actually comes out ahead at the casinos. It's blind luck, I know.

Moss - I have a feeling it may be luck, but at least in part, it may be her technique as well. My wife and I go to Foxwoods or Mohegan a few times a year and each play $50. Our rule is that we stop when out or up by $50. Each visit, one of us is always up a few bucks anyway. The trick is not to get greedy. A $20 or $30 dollar win may be all that you can get out of a night. And that's fine with me, as it pays for the gas to get down there!

I think we could do better with the comps (we don't get any now) if we had the players club cards for each casino.

Up here in the North East, the Indians make a good living gambling....then again, they own the casinos.

It's all luck. She wins raffles, drawings, etc... Heck, she took us to a conservation club picnic and did the cake walk 4 times. She won each of our kids a cake, us a cake, them a cake.

To me casino games of chance are not very exciting...cards are boring and take too much concentration...sports betting is a fools sport...
Although they have been eliminated in most states of late...(and rightfully so for humanitarian reasons)...I always enjoyed greyhound racing...much more exciting than human ridden horses etc...those dogs only cared about one thing...catching that rabbit...!

Old gambling tip:...if you go to the dog track...bet on the rabbit...it wins every race...

There is a reason the house comps gamblers and it is NOT because they are winning. I had a woman supervisor once who made annual treips to Vegas. Aslswasy bragged about winning "And they even comp me!!". I asked if she ever thought about WHY they comped her. No answer.

They comp her to keep her coming back. She knows that. But she's always up a couple thousand at the end of each year. Me? I'm happy to get out of there with a penny ahead.

Gambling quiz: if a flipped coin is heads 10 times in a row, what are the chances of it coming up heads on the 11th time?
