Anybody here ever make money gambling?

I met a guy last year who plays to make money. He said the casinos offer drinks to the customers and after they've had a few, it's easier to take their money.

I used to go to the Conn. casinos with a friend who always bragged that his wife couldn't lose at the slots... she won 1500 last week.... 2 months ago she won 30,000.... 9 months ago, she won 20,000... yada yada yada.

So I asked him why she worked? Why not quit her job and stay there full time if she was SO lucky?? No clear response. They have a cash business and she would go at least twice a week. My guess is that she lost lots, just never told hubby, just told him about the winnings.

The state making money is a ruse, they end up spending it all on nonsense and still they are all broke.

I'm nearly a millionaire playing Texas Holdem play money. I sure hope the feds and state don't find out about this or they will be taxing me. Maybe I could pay with Monopoly money.

My former employer sent me to a seminar on accounts receivable factoring. There was this guy from a finance company from another state. His finance company was located just a few miles from some local casino. Well, his story was that all these folks would go to the local casino, lose a bunch, and then think they could win it back. So they'd borrow against their cars, etc, at his finance company, and then go blow it at the casino. He was at the seminar trying to figure out how to raise more money to lend them.

Knew a guy in Houston on the east side who owned a liquor store near the ship channel. Had a room in back where high stakes poker and craps and big money pool was played frequently. He made some money charging to hold the games, drinks, etc. He knew the angles.

As for me, I would never waste my time or money visiting a casino 12 miles away, should it ever be constructed, and there are currently casinos operating

What if they put a Culver's next to it?

Just kiddin.

Gambling is like any other form of entertainment. You have to decide how much entertainment you are willing to buy that night and stick to your limits.

You could go to a movie, go out to eat, go to a play, go gambling, etc...

When we go to the casinos I usually put say $20.00 in my right pocket. I go to the one armed bandits, plug in my 20 in a penny machine, play 10 cents at a time and push the bet button 200 times. Then I cash out. Whatever I get I put in my left pocket and go home. Sometimes I come home with a buck eighty, sometimes I come home with 60 bucks. Either way, I had a fun time.

Speaking of Michigan casinos, this is an honest to goodness true story...

Many years ago my wife and I went to one along Lake Michigan, I think it was Little River. We walk in and the place is packed. We're walking around looking for open slots and we come around an isle and there are the paramedics with a guy laid out on the floor, shirt open, doing CPR. And right next to them, some guy is sitting on a stool, looking down at the poor guy and reaching over and playing the machine in front of the guy on the floor. Everyone was watching the paramedics, but they kept on playing. We left the area, found some seats on the other side of the casino, dropped a couple quarters, won 40 bucks, cashed out and left. We weren't in there 20 minutes. Haven't been back there since.

I'm with Moss on this one. I can probably count the amount of times I've been gambling on one hand. Couple of times in Reno, once in Atlantic City, once in West Virginia. Every time I set an amount (no more than $50) and if I ran out of money, I quit. Usually had a good time and and actually won a couple hundred dollars one time.
I have known a couple of people with pretty obvious gambling problems and not just at casinos. Their reasoning always amazed me. I'm happy not to have that affliction.
That said, we are off to Lake Tahoe this summer and will probably hit the casinos one night at least.

No doubt many of us here have been told by someone that they won big while gambling, but most likely we never learn about the losses. When my folks were still around, they always had news of the $300 or whatever they won playing the slots, but they never told me about the times they lost. Figures. If you buy a stock and it goes up, you tell everybody, but if it goes down, you keep it to yourself.
