Briggs and Stratton OHV - Stripped Spark Plug

This past fall I tried to start my pressure washer and was having a hard time. Its a Troy Built 3100 psi unit that I bought from Lowes. Its been kinda finicky since the first tank of gas ran through it. So I went to pull the spark plug and it broke clean at the threads. Any tips on how to remove the threaded "insert" left in the head? I'd chuck this box store POS, but it wasn't cheap and has been used very little.

Will it thread on down? Take the head off remove from back side. Guess all it will cost you is a gasket and time????

You need to pull the head because the ceramic tip probably went inside or will and will destroy your engine when you start it. Unless you got lucky and it's all attached to the part that broke off. Then use a bolt extractor down the center of the threaded bore of the plug. I would watch trying to screw it in. If there is a lip on the threads still left, you can destroy the threads in the AL head.

I Personally have given up on B & S engines . When ever I have any issue's with them , they are chucked and replaced with the Predator from Harbor Freight . Replaced the engine on my log splitter several years ago and have had no issue's since . Starts a lot easier also . Also about to give up on the Honda on my pressure washer . Replaced a 3.5 h.p. vertical shaft on a old lawn mower with the 5.5 h.p. predator . Thing is a mowing beast . Only use it a few weeks every spring and it starts every time .

We are doing the same for my Dad's old log splitter and a gas air compressor my brother is going to sell . Just my opinion .

Does the OHV motor come apart like the old ones? I was worried that I would screw up the valves.

I was thinking of doing this as well. I literally have about 15 hrs of run time on this pressure washer. And for 14 of those hours, that B&S has run like crap.

To pull the head, I have to remove the engine. So I'll pull it apart and if I screw it up, a Predator engine will go back on!

Real lucky. Go buy a lottery ticket. On the way back get a set of bolt extractors from the tool store. I prefer the square ones, they bit better from my experience. I used to buy them at Sears, but not sure where or what they sell anymore. Last set I bought online. The one below is similar, not sure what brand I bought. If you use them enough, the smaller ones will break on the tough jobs.

I would just use the correct sized ez-out and remove whats left of your plug.

There's an outside chance the spark plug had defect and was putting out a weak spark and causing the poor performance...also why it broke like it did ??

Hope this thread does no go on like the "rounded off drain plug" thread......

Only problem I have had with any B&S's are the stupid neoprene (rubber?) "O" ring they use for a needle seat in carb swelling up and not letting any fuel in... GRRRRR..... 20 cent part and our billion dollar alcohol fuel program screws it up........

Actually - that would be bad. This motor is not worth too much effort. Just a good try before replacement.

By reading the OP's description would be a good start. It took me a couple of reads but then figured it out.

Change "striped" for "broken" and it reads fine.... Yeah my first though was threads in head were toast....

Sorry - for some reason it was in my head as a "stripped" plug when I wrote it. But its not, its broken at the threads, even with the head.

I'd take a propane torch, heat the plug, let it cool and turn it out. Get it fairly hot...
