How does your garden grow?

I has not been warm enough out here for my tomato plants to do much of anything yet.

BLACK FLIES!

Planted starter plants but it' not looking good! Cold and windy!

The Tomatoes will need help. What is the best fertilizer? Any truth to getting better/sooner crop by keeping well trimmed? We always have a thousand unripe tomatoes when frost hits.

Makes three of us. On another note I planted pinto beans for the first time. Gotta figure out how to know when to pick them.

4 of us . . . :)

A thousand is a lot of green tomatoes. I have dozens (maybe a hundred) and I just pick them when there is no hope for them to ripen outside and let them ripen in the house. My mom used to put them in brown paper bags and close the top and ripen them in there. Cool climate gardening tricks

My mother used them to make green tomato relish... :licking: anything else to me still tastes too sweet.

Sorry. Yes, it was more like dozens. Many dozens.

I feel bad that I put them out of the warm house into the cold and wind.

I have no idea how my (wife's) garden grows... I am excited to get home Wednesday after two week exhausting trip to Asia visiting four countries, 7 cities, and never more that two nights in a hotel. Worked everyday including two weekends showing my new boss the APAC territory.

On green tomatoes, I suppose we should do something with the 100s of green 'cherry' tomatoes we have at the end of the season. Many vines are so loaded it is almost like a grape cluster!

Okay, a little exaggeration but my wife plants so many tomatoes growing from seed and she doesn't have the heart to not see them through to the end after all the effort put in! Of course many, many ripen but there are quite a few that don't before the cold sets in around here.

Tomato preserves :licking: . . . My grandmother born in the late 1800's (rip) made THE BEST tomato preserves in the world . . .

Always a problem here too. I'd say less than half ripen before the first frost and/or days get too short to ripen on-vine.

We just bring them inside, place them in a cardboard box and layer them with newspaper separating the layers. About 75% of them will ripen over the course of a month or so. The rest just seem to rot before they ripen and go into the compost pile.

We first pull the plant, roots and all and hang them upside down in the garage or sun room. Then the remaining get boxed similarly to what you do but most seem to rot at that point.

Just noticed a msg from my Dad on VM from Munich. 36c and the forests are burning.
