Was watching a video on youtube of wtfarmgirl at a tractor salvage yard. Got a kick watching her confuse fertilizer carts with manure spreaders and potato pickers with rock pickers but anyways.. In the video she shows a couple old dozers with wide wooden blocks bolted to the flats of the pads. I'm wondering why? Work on hard surfaces? Id think it would be slippery. They were wider than the tracks so maybe for muddy or sandy dirt? Seems like they'd clog right up. I don't know but I'd like to.

Probably for lighter psi footprint on soft or swampy ground.

When here in Holland they started to re conquer land from the sea, wide tracks were not available from the US crawler manufacturers, so beech blocks were bolted to the crawler pads, both fir floatation as well as not damaging the pavement on their way to the field.

Sounds way more convenient than keeping a truckload of old tires to set out on every pavement crossing.
