In my experience very few animals live in the deadwood on the forest floor. To easy for something up the food chain to "harvest"

It's pretty hard not to have an impact when we are so dominant on the planet. We do try to leave snags, and encourage the operators to stay away from large debris on the forest floor which you describe. Any "old growth" here is <300 years and generally much younger than that. Not much lives in a stagnant old stand though, and rather than sequestering carbon they are releasing it back into the atmosphere as the trees deteriorate.

It would be nice if this thread got back to the original topic though, after over 10,000 posts I would hate to see it get shut down.

Here I'll help with that, saw this going down the road the other day. At least they tried to strap. 20190430_103957.jpeg20190503_233522.jpeg

I wonder how well those top rolls do being strapped down like that.

I have a number of sod farms by me, however they usually do more then a single strap over a pair of pallets.

Rig up a couple of clamps so you can add a couple of flags or driveway reflectors. Or those magnetic trailer alignment balls.

I use the Harbor Freight magnetic trailer alignment balls and they are perfect for backing up a small trailer. They're are a little flimsy and easily broken but for $8 with a 20% off coupon solve a lot of problems.

I put a broomstick, sticking up, in the back corner of the tiny camp trailer I posted above. That let me verify the trailer was still there, on the highway. But even with that guide the trailer was a b**ch to back up. It's so short that it gets sideways in an instant.

Edit, added - About like backing up a small cement mixer.

I drove Vans with only front windows in a city environment. Wonder how I ever managed. And never mastered mirrors either. The bosses wanted to save money, but probably lost it in production, as I circled the block until I could find a place to drive straight into. One boss even saved twenty five bucks by not getting a spare tire.

Part of it here is security... less windows to break!

I've had my old home-built box trailer for quite a while. Locating it behind a smaller vehicle isn't bad, but I use bicycle flags on the rear corners pulling with a big truck.

When i first moved here, I noticed the coolest small trailer in use next-door. Neighbour was building his own house, with his Dad, who was an ironworker.

That little trailer had an extendable tongue....... hauling a longer beam or whatever, just release the locking pins, and stretch the tongue out longer. Great versatility (and build quality) in a compact trailer; haven't seen the like since.

That's exactly what I was thinking as I was writing that post.

I used to drive a C-65 with a 24x8 foot rack body, pulling a hay mulcher which is like a tow behind wood splitter. By the time that I could see the thing in my mirrors it would be jackknifed. The operator would be sitting on it motioning which way for me to turn; as if I could see through the middle of the load of hay. Somehow even though I couldn't see it I was still able to back into some horrendous places so that we could spread hay.

Maybe it was a Snow Bear that we were discussing above, Posts # 9957 ~ 9961 and subsequent.

Here's mine with the tongue extended, for setting out tree props.

We have Snowbear trailiers here; guess I haven't looked at them close enough to notice that feature. The trailer I was describing was 31 years ago, home-built by that ironworker.

Could have a stop-plate on the end of the extension telescope, but somehow that type of variable length setup on a volume-production trailer is a bit surprising, today.

I've seen dump trailers behind dumptrucks like that. It had some air or hydraulic mechinism to lock & unlock on the fly. Truck would pull into the site, stop, then pull forward with the trailer staying put. Get 20' or so of extra tongue. Dump the trailer, all but jackknife then dump the truck barely clearing the tongue. Then they would backup & retract the tongue.

They has 2 trucks hauling dozens of loads of paper sludge (wet heavy smelly grey sawdust more or less) like that every day year round as waste products from a paper mill.

Fast. Slick setup, pun semi-intended :).

The one I saw years ago was all manual, and nothing on that scale....... practical car-trailer size, built with precision and strength, by an olde-tyme ironworker. Burt has been gone a number of years now...... he was the kind of guy that build quality mattered, in everything he did.

I went to the mall today,, Sears was having a sale on compost,,,
this guy was cleaning up!!

He was going to lift the tractor front wheels with the loader, and drive the truck home, with the loader in tow,,

ehaZvxP.jpg

I told the tractor owner about this thread on TBN,,,
and how important it was that he not drive home,, towing the tractor without a trailer,,

He agreed to look at this forum thread, then, he got into his car,, and left,,, :cool2:
