Many of us don't pay much attention to Mr. Orange.

I suggest calling the dealer to make them aware of your incident. Maybe they can suggest something useful instead of pointing fingers at you.

Both good comments.

When the tractor popped out of park, the first I would have done was to make sure it was a safety issue with the tractor and then called Kubota and the dealer..

I am no expert, so thanks for posting your experience.

MY JD 855 parking brake did not work so I learned to deal with it but it was a pain. Forced good habits though!! Tried wheel chocks but they are not convenient.

Glad you were not injured to killed. Agree with those who advise getting it looked at by the dealer. The **** thing should be able to be parked with the engine running and not take off.

You shut the engine off every time you get off a piece of equipment??

Heck no. That is a diversion from the real problem. I guarantee you that most users DO NOT always power down the engine when they get off nor should they need to.

Let's see those ideas/prototypes for a DIY foot-brake latch to pass the info along to owners with this technical shortcoming! (Would void the warranty? Unbolt it before you haul your tractor to the dealer for that other Warranty stuff.)

Forgive me me for suggesting that talent like this bunch brings could come up with something quicker than a dealership can patch up what the factory/designers/bean-counters left out. My '89 H-D motorbike is 'showroom stock'. None of my tractors or trucks stays that way for long. Safety features are paramount, so I don't mean non-skid floor mats or 'camo' mud flaps and fender flares.

(I love to dare you guys. No one ever dares me back.)

btw, inode, you are hereby 'un'-grounded for sharing the warning. Thanks for that. :)

A foot brake latch would be easy.. Kubota needs to adjust whatever is out of adjustment. I wouldn't rely on the park feature myself, being able to lock the brake is a necessity for me.

You violated several standard tractor safety procedures. We all get careless/sloppy, myself included, from time to time.

THE ENGINE SHOULD HAVE BEEN OFF. You should realize this by now.

You need to review and dedicate yourself to safe tractor operating procedures rather than Kubota redesign the tractor.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!

Jeff, ye be too harsh. Plus I disagree with you. As others pointed out there are MANY very legit applications that require the engine running without the operator in the seat. Obviously there SHOULD be a safe way to set the brakes or the tranny lock to keep the tractor in place. here are a couple of comments I believe are relevant:

1) There have been major disputes between Kubota, their dealers and customers regarding that tranny Park feature. I know of one specific case where it was a cab style tractor. The owner says he set the Transmission Park feature and claims to be sure of it. The tractor ran over a steep embankment, largely destroyed the cab and whatever implement he had on it, etc. I do not know if this has emerged from the legal tangles or not. But this was a major incident dollar wise and liability wise. The dealer's verbal opinion is that the Park feature was not really set. There have been enough of these cases that I think there should be an independent outside investigation of the feature -- after all this IS LIFE-THREATENING or can be.

2) A serious professional independent investigation is THOROUGHLY warranted regarding this feature and better to see that done than all of us pontificating.

3) My own MF2660 has a lever type parking brake with the following characteristics: a) It takes a weight lifting champ to get it set firmly enough to do much good and it takes TWO of the champs to get the blasted thing released. It is a lousy partial feature. I have always wished for a transmission lock. I see no reason, other than cost, to not provide BOTH.

4) One immediate caveat is that no parking brake or device should be used/depended upon on very steep slopes. That is just common sense. "Very steep" is a judgement call as with most difficult circumstances.

One way to initiate that is a complaint to the CPSC via saferproducts.gov:

CPSC SaferProducts.gov | Report an Unsafe Product

Enough legitimate complaints can end up in a formal Recall. Big Orange has quite a list of those, so despite the protestations of a few stalwarts, they are not perfect.
