Tractor
John Deere 750 SCUT with 67 loader
I buggered the first couple of threads on the steering column of my JD750 tractor while removing the steering wheel.

I'm pretty sure, based on the thread-pitch gauges at the hardware store, that the nut that holds the steering wheel in place is 7/16 x 20.

Before I spend $30 on a rethreading die, I'm hoping to get confirmation that 7/16 x 20 is indeed the correct size. I can't seem to find that in print anywhere I've searched.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks!

JD parts says the nut is NLA (No Longer Available) so I can't confirm from the P/N, specs are no longer listed

If the hardware store has fine thread bolts, I would see if a 7/16-20 bolt fits the nut. If not, I would then try metric bolts. 12mm x 1.25mm pitch or 13mm x 1.25mm pitch. I am not sure if this tractor used both "inch" and Metric fasteners.

Another option instead of a die is a thread file. They are sized to the thread pitch.

Or you could just file away the first couple of bad threads.

Know anyone that might have a thread repair tool? Threadmate, NES, etc.

If it's made outside US is allmost always metric.

OK, thanks for the info. I did try to file away the first couple of threads, and was getting close, but want to make sure I don't FUBAR the thing.

I'll head back to the HW store and try to confirm thread size with a bolt, as you suggested.

I have salvaged the day with using a very small triangle file and patiently working around the threads till its cleaned up enough to accept nut....

my old parts book says it's a 12mm, but doesn't give pitch

M13 bolt does not exist as a ordinary option for metric bolts.

My money is on 12x1.25mm

I don't have anything useful to contribute, but as far as IDing bolt size and pitch, I finally had enough and spent the money on one of these which I had saved for a long while:

Nut & Bolt Thread Checker (Inch & Metric) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003FJW0GK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_NrRTCbXMAA8CG

I liked it enough that I ended up buying the other 2 options which are all metric and all SAE, both of which include more sizes. I keep those two sets hanging in the garage and take the combo one with me for off-site work. God, did I ever hate the guessing game of buying multiple possible matches in hopes one would work and never quite getting around to returning the others. BUT... Having a bunch of extra bolts and nuts in the nut-bucket does occasionally prove useful...

Thanks, I was guess what would be close to 7/16", So my first guess of 12mm might be better.

Well, I borrowed a thread repair tool from AutoZone, and none of the thread repair dies would fit on to the steering shaft. The 7/16 x 20 tap went smoothly through both the old nut and a new nut that I bought.

I fussed around with a thread repair file, and eventually got to a point where the original nut went back on to the shaft with some coaxing. I used grease on the threads (Never-seize), and it seems solid. I'd wager I'll be cursing myself down the line for not making this repair 100%, but time will tell!

In addition to getting the nut back on, I finished up changing fluids and filters. They were WAY overdue, which I expected after discovering the cable to the tach was broken and not reading RPM or hours after I bought the tractor....

Did you try anything metric? What size nut did you buy?

Cut a quarter circle section out of a nut and use it as a thread pitch gauge. Just a thought, never done it.
Glad you got it fixed.
