Can anyone identify what is happening with this tree? I'm not sure if it's an oak or maple (until and unless it grows some leaves).

I'm also seeing some of that rust colored stains on some other trees in the area.

It looks like it has some kind of fungal disease.

Are you sure it isn't an Ash? We have a huge problem up my way with the Asian Longhorn Beetle. I have a couple of trees that look the same as yours.

It could be. The tree is in my neighbor's back yard and he isn't sure what it is. How can I tell if it's the Asian Longhorn Beetle? Will there be holes?

I will take some pictures for you when I get home. Holes yes, also you will see light strips/patches all the way up the tree.

Furnone- I live a little north of you and recently had a few of my ash removed from near the house by a tree service. Their licensed arborist told me that ash trees are being negatively impacted by the (Chinese) emerald ash borer as well as some virus. He also told me that the EAB is in northern CT and spreading northward into MA.

Like TS I am definitely not a tree expert and ID'ing a tree by its bark is not one of my strengths. I would look for a "D" shaped hole on your trees' trunks. The "D" hole has the curved arch on top.

Once the ashes become infested with EAB's they die quickly, the wood needs to be removed and/or burned processed before the EAB's hatch. It is better to have the tree removed before it dies. OSHA regs prevent tree climbing once the ash tree is dead. He e-mailed me some literature on the EAB I will try to find it.

Good luck

You are right - I misspoke. I meant Emerald Ash Borer. They are wiping out the Ash throughout the province

Emerald Ash Borer infested, and woodpeckers peel the bark in strips looking for the larvae. Eventually the tree will die and the bark will peel off in full thickness chunks not just the surface. We had the EAB infest our area years ago and there are no Ash trees left other than small saplings. As the saplings grow in size the EAB attack them too.

X2. We have dozens of examples of this on our 2.5 acres...at least the wood is heating our house at the moment.
