Hello,

I have sears riding mower bout 12 years old. Been having some starting issues so i measured voltage while running.

Meter remained at 12V while running. Does anyone have some fault isolation procedures they would share? I assume there is a V regulator i could check.

Any help much appreciated, thanks

Welcome to TBN. We could do much better with engine and chassis numbers, or if it is simpler post a pic of the engine/ regulator if it has one.

Voltage regs are cheap . not sure what model you have but on the bigger engines its on the side and a simple swap ,.

I have a pic from the left side facing the mower. Just by the starter are some wires thay appear to go under the top cowling. The wires go back towards battery compartment but could not identify a reg box.

Does the following help?
Stamped on a cover on the front of the engine.

Model 407777
Type 0607 E2
Code 050822YG

If something comes to mind i would be plenty appreciative.

Tks, but where is it located on the mower? Under cowling maybe??

Should be on the side of engine the wires would run under cowling

your profile does not say where you are but I have 4 sears riders behind my shop for parts come on and pick you a part

Very kind offer, but will make reg bad and probably buy new. Thanks again
Hope its not the stator, if it has one :)

pull fly wheel and clean with wire brush may help.

Get a model number for it and do an internet search to get a parts diagram. It will tell you what kind of parts it has and give you an idea of where they're located.

Some mowers have a very primitive charging system, a coil on the flywheel and a diode between it and the battery. Usually if there's a charging problem it's the diode, which is a few bucks to replace.

So the Briggs parts listing does not delineate which charging system you have. You can identify the type by referencing the parts list illustrations by the wire end style and wire color on the alternator chart. The regulator will not be under the shroud if it has one.

Well i am learning by the hour. I found a charging system ref guide for briggs. They instructed as you suggested, note connector and wire colors then ref same on chart. Have not got that far but i am close for Monday.

Today i had to remove flywheel on our ancient troybuilt tecumseh power tiller and replaced points/condensor. I asked the guy at the parts store bout cleaning magnets, he said no need. Rust conducts, guess they informed him at Briggs school. I never knew that.

Anyway Monday i will tear into Sears charging challenge, appreciate all the good posts, i am more informed......thanks

Just wanted to clear the thread. No regulator, no charge coming from stator. Replaced stator and all working as it should be. Thanks to all that contrbuted, we are better informed
