Thanks for all the info guys. I'm leaning towards #2 above - the dual lid Wicked Root grapple. It says up to 55 HP, would it be OK on my MX5800? Also, I'm thinking I'd want either the 66" or 72" model, which one would you recommend?

i would get the 66 inch model, I have a 66 inch wide grapple on my 55 hp tractor and it is width wise about right- if I was to get another I would go narrower not wider, but jmo and :2cents:

ps. since brush and logs are main uses you are making a good choice with the L style grapple an added bonus is you can also use it to move split wood to

What horsepower is it?

66" if going to be using in the woods, 72" if not.

I have a 72", but also have 4 wheel steering and use it in the trees a lot.

I disagree. If you ever plan to knock down trees and uproot them, or clear an area of saplings, brush such as privet, a narrow one works better, and a single lid has plenty of holding power. And a narrow one scoops up debris just fine. I move huge piles with mine. There’s no way I could dig up a stubborn root ball of a 8” tree with a wide grapple. And this is a function I do very often.

Now if you don’t need to do this, and you’re only using a grapple to “rake” up limbs and debris, then I’m sure a wider one works great. But my narrow one will do everything a wider one will do, plus is much better at digging. I will plunge my narrow one under a root ball, often lifting my tractor front end, then curl and drive forward, plucking the root ball out. Very stubborn ones may even require “digging” all around it to loosen it. A wide one wouldn’t do that, as it would be like digging up a tree with a wide snow shovel rather than a spade. So if that is a function you need, go narrow. If not any width grapple works great. A grapple will expand tremendously what your tractor will do. I haven’t used my bucket in 8 years.

I have an MX5800 with the Wicked Root Grapple V2 in 66". It's perfect as far as I am concerned. I wouldn't want more or less wide to be honest.

Dual lid is the way to go. 54” wicked on B26 has been a blessing.

72” skid steer grapple on M59. Big tractors requires heavy duty grapple.

Compact Telehandler with a grapple now that is cool! Familiar with the bigger ones on the job site. While very tough and versatile never seen one do grub work, dirt work or trees.
