When I was a kid, my grandfather had an old buzz saw with a 30” blade. It was powered by a 5hp electric motor. It was impressive how fast that thing could cut 10” diameter logs without losing any speed.

Andy, do you know what that type of blade is called? It doesn't have any "hook" to the tooth like a crosscut, rip, or chainsaw, so it's probably not as grabby. In fact, it looks like it would cut as well in either direction.

I saw a TBN forum for videos but I have enough trouble doing searches. Wish one of our resident techies would do a video posting tutorial.

JMC I don’t know what it’s called or even if it’s a specific type. I bought it off a guy who’s uncle had it set up a long time ago as a buzz rig on his farm. I can tell you it has been resharpened many times and I suspect that the tooth profile has drifted over the years. I touched it up with a file to put a fresh edge to it and it seems to work well. I agree it is not grabby because it does not have an aggressive profile as it stands now.

It's dirty, icky, rusty, dull, only 26" and has been outside for at least 30 years, but I gots me one. Came with the house. I use it as a base for a manual slide hammer wood splitter.

Awesome! What GPM motor are you using?

My tractor is rated at 7.7 GPM flow so I took that and bought motor that would give me around 700 rpm no load speed. I’d have to go through my design notes to remember how many cubic inches per revolution that works out to but that’s how I picked the motor. That and making sure it was rated for the correct pressure. Hope that helps.
