It's why I would never be content without multiple backups, for backups. Even like having several tractors. Redundancy! Maybe you can't blow snow with one, but you can push it with another. I even have a swede (sp?) saw in case all my fifteen chain saws fail! Or kerosene lamps. That kind of thing. If I am ever without power, heat, water or light, something really bad must have happened.

In my opinion, these consumer whole house generators are in the home appliance league, being of no higher quality or reliablility than your home Depot Dishwasher or Lawn Mower.

Have to agree completely, that is the way I operate also. Our motto in the military is two is one and one is none and my wife and I generally double up on that.

Possible freezing rain here. Ran main set for an hour with 4800watt heater. Had block heater on for an hour. That little Kubota really likes it's heat. Stacked some wood in front of stove just in case.

We have a whole house Yanmar diesel 12KW. I bought it in Japan and had it shipped over with the tractors back in 2004.
It runs the whole house and uses a little over a gallon every 8 hrs, its totally encased so its very quiet and runs at 1800 rpm.
That was a good purchase I have never regretted.

I spent a few days on a cargo ship. I had just bought my JD770 and was impressed to see three Yanmar plants powering the ship. One a standbye. They don't make quality much better than that.

Hey TractorErnie, that is amazing! That is only 3 gallons of diesel for a whole 24 hour day. Do you remember how much these things cost?

We bought it used, as is from the tractor sellers over there. I really don't remember what I paid for it.
We used a little over a gallon in 8 hrs because we had the air cond running

I ran it non stop for a week after a hurricane and Im still amazed at how smooth, quiet and reliable it is after all these years.

Diesel is the way to go. There are a lot of them on Craig's list, just don't get fooled by a cheap chinese Yanmar knockoff.
Yes, there are fake Yanmar engines being imported, a lot of them wind up as generators for the unsuspecting customer.

We have a 14KW, Similar but smaller displacement engine. Kohler and Generac are pretty common in our area, Kohler owners were a little happier.

We had a coil fail, late in heating season, after four years. Part was still covered on warranty. This is a rare failure.
