I am 33, wife is 25 and we have a toddler. We recently moved to a new place and the living room is not conducive to haveing a TV. The big brick fireplace is designed to be the focal point of the room and the mantle is too high to put a TV on top of. There are windows on either side and a kitchen behind. A TV just doesn稚 fit without looking forced. So, we decided to just do away with it altogether.

Are we the only ones without a TV in their home? Yes, we have computers and smartphones but we don稚 watch shows on them. We have really found so much more enjoyment from spending quiet evenings in front of a fire and talking ad just generally enjoying each others company.

No. Not much worth watching anyway. Time better spent with family.

I have one - but the only time it gets turned on is to watch the local (out of Reno) news so I can keep up on what's going on in Northern Nevada. It's an ancient old CRT type TV if you understand what I mean, not a flat screen.

I much prefer a good book and good music on the stereo while I relax in front of the fire this time of year!

I have one, but it's a dust collector since it hasn't been turned on for close to five years now.

I have 6 :(

Somehow we still found time to create 3 lives. I have a Roku smart tv in the shop so I can have Gymkana or some crap on in the background while I am wrenching.

We have one, the wife likes her soaps, murder mysteries etc.
I am pretty much deaf, don't wear my hearing aids much when at home, so I will have the TV on with closed captioning.....really don't look at it that much though. Waste too much time on forums......lol

We have 2 TV's. The little one in the bedroom probably hasn't been turned on in a year. But the big one in the living room is always on unless my wife is in bed. She turns it on when she gets out of the bed, and the last thing she does before going to bed is to turn the TV off.

I have one down in my shed; the first new TV that I ever bought, just before everything went digital so that I have absolutely no reception here.
I had Netflix for a while but there was nothing on worth watching; then I had Amazon Prime but everything I wanted still cost extra. Plus both required autopay and I don't even allow that from my own CU which holds my mortgage and tractor loan.

I find myself watching a lot of old movies on youtube.

We have 2. One in the living room, and one in the kitchen. Neither one is hooked to any outside source, not even rabbit ears. They are each only hooked to a blue ray player, and we sometimes watch a movie, or watch a tv series we like once it's released to disk. Most of the time they are both turned off.

I really do enjoy TV. First thing in the morning is local and national news. My wife and I record shows, we have hers/mine/ours shows which we replay during the week. My son on the other hand has no clue what a TV is, just enjoys his life without it.

Couldn't do it.....I like sports too much. :cool2:

If you are happy without it then no need to get one. I only turn on the TV to watch football, and that doesnt happen regularly. I do watch on my iPad but mostly YouTube vidoes to try and learn something. I watch absolutely no news from mainstream. Life is much happier without it.

Hmmmm..... large plasma in the living room with local antenna and roku box. We watch maybe 6 hours of TV per week. 4 half hour shows, 1 one hour show and a few episodes of The Walking Dead (we're trying to catch up, now starting season 5, got a relative working on the production side of that show), and I watch 18 minutes of news while eating a bowl of cereal and playing with the cats in the morning. My wife also rides her elliptical trainer for an hour each morning in the living room. The large screen is waaaay over there on the other side of the room and she has it on while she rides. Small flat screen in the kitchen on top of the fridge. Nice to watch the news when making dinner or watch Jeopardy while doing dishes. Small one in the bedroom on the low dresser. Watch a movie with the wife or the news late at night before going to bed and maybe a monologue on one of the talk shows. That one's sleep timer gets used often. Small old CRT/VCR TV in the basement, also on top of a fridge. Use that if I'm working on something in the basement, doing laundry, or working out on the weight bench or Nordictrack.

Our living room is a long 12' x 24' rectangle. It's divided into two living areas by a loveseat with a library table behind it. We had to put the TV at one end, as the other has built in cabinets, a bench and drawers. We didnt' want to hang it on the wall. What I ended up doing was finding a low, 2 drawer dresser, something about the height of a cedar chest that you'd put at the foot of a bed. It was about 100 years old, dark wood, and beat up a bit. Matches our woodwork! I took the two drawers out, cut off the faces, built two shelves inside the carcass, and put the drawer fronts back on, but hinged them to fold down when you open them instead of pulling out like a drawer, so now they are doors, not drawers. I stuffed all of our entertainment system gear in there and put large vents in the back. The 50"ish plasma sits on top of that. The wires are hidden, and I put IR extenders on the electronics and a sensor on the top/back side of the unit. So everything is hidden and it looks pretty nice.

Some of our best memories as a family of are my pulling the sleeper sofa out on a Friday night, ordering a pizza, and popping in a movie for the kids. My wife and the kids would lay on the sleeper sofa eating pizza and later popcorn. I'd sit on the loveseat with my feet propped up on the end of the sleeper mattress. All the lights are off, the surround sounds is cranked up, the glow of the TV lighting up the room. The floor shaking from the sub-woofer.... and watching the kids eyes and expressions as they enjoyed the movie. Man, those were fun times.

Kids are grown up now. 21 and soon to be 26. Once in a while when they come home, we'll still pop in a favorite movie and just enjoy each other's company.

One of Oklahoma's own. Went to a car show in Checotah couple years back; they are pretty proud of her too.

I went for 10 years without a tv. Because I didn't know the latest shows or sports it sometimes made casual converstation more difficult. One problem with not being used to the tv was when I went somewhere that had a tv it commanded a lot more of my attention. I was not used to ignoring it. I found it best to position myself in the room so it was not in view.

When I moved in with my now-wife she had a tv and I had to get used to it (though she does not watch it a lot). I have no interest in any of the popular shows or sports so I still have the problem of not knowing them when they come up in conversation. It's less of a problem now that most people have hundreds of channels and watch different things.
