I have been having starting issues with my old, new to me, 1300D. I decided to start with the injectors. When I went to remove them, the retaining bolts were finger tight at best. The injectors literally lifted out with no effort and even wiggled before I removed the retainers. Obviously someone had been in there before me. I did not see any new seals etc. The injectors are covered in carbon. My question is, is it possible that the loose injectors were my problem all along? Would love to hear your opinions.

Clearly a major cause of hard starting if there's a massive leak of compression! Yes they should be tight.

But there must be some reason why the prior owner loosened them, so there could be additional issues.

I am surprised it would start at all with loose injectors. That's a very odd, (as in "unheard-of"), complaint on these forums.

I have to agree. I have always seen the opposite, with the injectors being stuck. I was dumbfounded when they fell out in my hand. Going to order the fiber washers Monday, check the spray pattern and hopefully re-assemble. It was getting harder and harder to start until it just wouldn't anymore.

That would most def. be a source of a hard to no start..
The last one I worked on, I had to buy the inj. removal tool from Hoye..
NO WAY that inj. was coming out w/o the tool..

When I bought my 2210d, it was a referb from Fredricks, it would start easily and run great, but I had a fuel leak coming from one of the injectors. I messed with that thing for days trying to figure out where the leak was coming from. Called Fredricks and they sent me a new injector. I heard stories about how hard it was to remove these injectors so I ordered the injector removal tool from Hoye. When I went to take out the old injector it came out with my fingers!! It did have some carbon build up but nothing major. I was surprised it came out that easy and didn't need the removal tool. Like I said my 2210d ran fine just had a fuel leak, so I can't say for sure if that is why your 1300 is having issues starting, but that still could be why?? I recently purchased a 155d the US version of the 1300. Mine does have a little trouble starting if its cold, but I just put a block heater in and it starts fine now.

When I removed mine recently, it took very little effort to remove them. Is it possible that that they shook loose? I know maintenance manual says to check all fasteners I believe every 100 hrs. Loose injectors would more than likely cause a loss of combustion pressure. I.e. a hard start. I'd flip them over and check spray pattern

Before they had that removal tool guys used to just loosen the nuts, bump the starter and they would pop free.:)

I am pretty sure they made the tool cause I am almost positive I read here that some people have tried that and they didn't budge an inch. I am thinking @California tried that on his and they didn't budge. I could be wrong on the peroom though.

But you are correct, that is a trick and many people have done that.

I tried THAT also.. I even had the engine RUNNING on 1 cylinder & it still wouldn't budge..
I HAD TO buy the tool.!!!

. . . . then there is always removing the studs and getting on it with a Vise Grip or pipe wrench and as long of a length of pipe as necessary:confused:

Norm, in the post I linked, I showed the injectors were recessed too far to get a good grip with anything. I tried 16" Channellocks but that only cut gouges in the injector.

Best of luck, I ordered the tool before I tried to get mine out, but I never needed to use it. That tool from Hoye is pretty nice though and should work really good.
Let us know how they come out with that tool so we all know for future reference.

Gouges are cosmetic. Guarantee a pipe wrench and 4', (actually 2':)) pipe will loosen them with studs removed.

Take a look at my photos in that thread. There are shoulders in the head that prevent getting a pipe wrench on the injectors. Also in my case rotating the injectors wouldn't have helped lift them out, they were a severe hard pull all the way up. Believe me, I tried every way I could think of to break them free by rotation before pulling them straight out.

If the tractor had been maintained properly they would have been taken out occasionally but I'm pretty sure this was the first time ever. They were cemented solid, all the way out.

I don't understand how you can say you can't get a pipe wrench on them. They stick up a good 2" above the head. It either works or breaks, it cannot slip, and I have never seen anyone break a pipe wrench.

Norm, there are 3-4-5 people in this thread that say it cant be done.. & I'm one of'm.. I've been doin this crap for over 30 years & "I" couldn't get 1 out.!!! You don't think I tried EVERY trick in the book BEFORE I ordered the tool??!!!
I ordered the tool & thought I'd break the inj. before it FINALLY budged w/ that MONSTER slide hammer Hoye sent me.!!!
WHY are u arguing?? Your not there.. You have no idea of his tooling situation.. Like I said previously> basically, If I cant do it, chances are pretty good you cant do it..

I just know how many, many, guys reported getting the job done before the tool existed. End of story IMHO.

Im pretty sure Hoye developed the tool fir their own YANMAR shop before they decided to make it and sell it to the public. Im sure there was a reason they thought it up??

I havent been there or done that. I am just reading all those that cant over the years. I would agree with you though, it sounds like most of them break free with other methods without resorting to the tool.
