Here are some pictures of what I thought was an interesting tree to take down today. It is an old white birch that has heavy lean and the top is hanging out over that flagged red oak. The oak has no place to go and I would like it to grow so the birch had to come down.



In order to keep it from damaging the oak and to put it in a slot with good position for winching the birch tree needed to fall about 45 degrees CCW from it's natural fall direction due to the lean.



I used a Swinging Dutchman to change the direction of fall by 45 degrees.





The top of the tree fell into the tractor road which is here.



I cut the top off and pulled it out of the way and piled some branches good for small firewood. Then backed to the tree and rigged a snatch block so I could pull the tree onto the road from it's top.



The log is 42' long and 16" at the butt



Pulled the butt to the tractor and headed for the landing. Will get a Pallet log and some firewood as a bonus. Someone else may get a nice red oak after I am long gone.

I always called those trees grey birch. As for the red oak the squirrels and deer will benefit every other year or so. You have any white oak? I haven't cut one of those in 35 years, I cant remember if it splits as easy as red oak or not.

You might be right on the Grey Birch. The load ticket says White Birch though which is good enough for me but could be White, Paper, or Grey which are grouped together. Yellow Birch is separate and easy to tell apart from White and Grey.

There are no White Oak up on this ridge land but there is some down in the Conn. River valley where it is warmer and only 6 or 7 miles down hill from here.

White and gray also will hybridize. While the former was the mainstay of turning mills for years, gray birch is only good for pulp, and doesn't even qualify as regeneration when we are meeting the laws set out in the Maine Forest Practices Act.
