Mahindra tractor
I have a 2014 Mahindra 6110 with 800 hours on it, that has been over heating every time I cut my grass with my 12 ft. Rhino bush hog. This problem started in the first of July this year when the plastic fan and belt broke for no reason. Right after my dealer replaced the fan and belt I started getting a Squealing sound coming from my AC compressor because the compressor was locking up. If I turned the AC on and off 3 or 4 times the Squealing sound stopped and the AC would work, BUT my tractor would over heat within 30 minutes of grass cutting with the AC on. I always ran my Tractor in Medium and the gear in number 1. I have run my tractor for the past 4 years like this with out it ever over heating. My Dealer told me to run my tractor in Low and number 1 gear till they figure out what is going on with my tractor and its over heating problem. I did as my dealer suggested and ran my tractor in Low and 1, and now it took 40 minutes this time for my tractor over heat again. I found if I run my tractor in neutral at 1700 rpm and with the pto shut off and the ac shut off that I can get the Temperature down from hot to 1/2 in 4 or 5 minutes and I can continue to cut my grass for another 10 minutes before the tractor over heats again. Now out of Frustration I tried something new. I got my tractor temperature back down to 1/2 now, and when I turned the ac on the temp immediately when to 3/4 before I shut the ac off, I did this 4 times and each time it did the same thing, it immediately when from the 1/2 to 3/4 before I would shut the ac off, because if I didn稚 shut the AC off, it go up into the hot. This all happened while my tractor was sitting in neutral. So I thought ok lets try running the tractor with the ac off. I put the tractor back in medium and number 1 in the gears, and I had to open all the windows like I have had to do many times before, but with the ac off I was able to completely cut all 6 acres of grass around my house with the temperature now just below 1/2 and no over heating. I am Sorry for the long post, but I believe my AC compressor is BAD AGAIN? If this AC compressor is bad and this is what is causing my over heating problem, This will make the THIRD AC COMPRESSOR in 4 years that had to be replaced. If any of you think my AC compressor is bad, My Question to you Is this NORMAL for Mahindra tractors to burn up the AC compressors? A new AC compressor is around $700.00 to 800.00 for the compressor alone, not counting labor to put it on. Please Help me, Is this NORMAL for Mahindra tractors to burn up the AC compressors in such a short time? I Thank you all for any help.

You did not mention the condition of the radiator. Is there a removable screen in front of it? Is is frequently cleaned when mowing? Have the radiator fins been cleaned? Can you shine a light through them?

Does the tractor have removable side panels? If so, removing while mowing should help.

It seems impossible for a bad AC compressor to cause overheating.

If your compressor is locking up, you might want to check the lines for vapor lock or something similar. Maybe bleed them?

Also you mentioned that the compressor was squealing. Did you check the tightness of the belt on the pulley? Could it be too loose?

I agree with AchingBack to check out the radiator, and I would also check the hoses for an obstruction going into and out of the block.

Just guessing here, but I think it's doubtful you're burning up 3 compressors.

I have a Mahindra 4510 with a similar problem. The core/fins on the radiator are quite close and it fills up with dirt/debris/seeds etc. I must air blow the same out after every use to keep it even reasonably cool which is much hotter than I prefer. It really ran warmer than it should until I took off one of the side panels as mentioned by AchingBack. That helped cool it down so it is at least tolerable to run, still between medium to hot, before much nearer the red hot line.
This was even after I lowered the battery for better air flow, removed the obstruction of the windshield washer container, added an electric push fan in front of the radiator. Just not the best designed cooling system if you mow in tall weeds, grasses etc.

yanmars Thank you for your reply. we have always keep the radiator and screens clean. Like I said my tractor has never had a over heating problem till now, 4 years latter and when I ran it the other day with my AC off, I was able to cut 6 acres without over heating.

It might be time for a new radiator, or at least a good flush.

you could have a bad thermostat or water pump.. either one of those will cause overheating. it's something to check for.

Mine ran right in the middle temp today but it only got 54 degrees outside, wish it would do that when it is in the mid 90s. I hope you get your temp problem worked out.

I'd shine a flashlight from inside the radiator shroud and then poke your head around in front of the radiator and make sure the light shines through 100% of the radiator fins. Helps if you are in a shop or it isn't real light out. Generally speaking folks with this issue will find the radiator clean on the outside but not able to pass air properly. The AC has to shed heat via the condenser. When it can't shed enough heat the pressures in the AC system get pretty high and will lock up the compressor. I would think this model has a high pressure switch which will cycle the compressor to shut off when the pressure is too high, but if it does that a bunch of times (like with a clogged radiator) it will eventually smoke the ac clutch. Sometimes it will smoke the belt first.

I think the fin spacing on the radiators is too close for some applications catching small stuff. Close spacing is very efficient in a laboratory, but if crud gets caught in the radiator it doesn't matter if it is a John Deere or a Caterpillar, it is going to get hot. I'm no engineer, but it seems like a radiator with wide fin spacing and a couple more rows of tubes would be the right way to go for this sort of application.

If in fact your radiator is truly clean and your AC condenser is also, then I am at a bit of a loss and the problem gets more complicated.

Dave Thank you sir for your help. You are right about making the radiator better and more efficient. If I knew someone who could do that I would have it done. Right now the dealer is replacing all the AC components like the switch, condenser, compressor and a couple other parts that were NOT replaced the last time on the second compressor was replaced less than a year ago. I hope this time it gets fixed right. Dave I Thank you again for your help. I been keeping all the information your great members have given me to help in me in the future. Have a great weekend. Make sure the condenser in front of the radiator is not plugged up with dust dirt. With the ac on the condenser creates a lot of heat and if there is no proper airflow it will cause over heating. Make sure it’s clean through and between the radiator. Blow air backwards through the radiator to make sure it isn’t plugged up.

Not that it helps current owners, but the new 2660 and 2670 that Mahindra will soon have out will have a larger capacity air conditioner system. Hopefully it will have a radiator that passes little stuff through instead of catching it. I do not know any other details as to how they are accomplishing this.

I have a small orchard. For years we mowed it with an old Ford 4600 that was lowered and made into an orchard model. We never clogged the radiator. It was an old school less efficient style radiator with wide fin spacing. Little bits just passed through. While it was less efficient I am sure, it worked as designed as it allowed air to pass through every square inch. I have seen across most brands the current use of the more efficient close fin spacing radiators. In theory these newer radiators cool very well, but it is a chore to keep them clean. I wish they would leave those to the automotive world and give us old school radiators.

Dave Thank You again for your reply and information. I will ask my dealer about the new system.

Probably the new system won't retrofit, and for sure even if it did Mahindra would not pay for the upgrade. Just like cars and trucks, improvements are made year over year. I think if it was my tractor and I knew I'd be mowing with a big mower in hot conditions often, I'd look into having a mega radiator made and also look into a condenser that doesn't catch chaff so badly. If your radiator stays cool and your condenser does it's job, the head pressure will not spike and the compressor will operate in a pressure range for which it's happy and will last for many, many years. Cycling on and off due to high head pressure (due to heat) shortens the compressors life.

So I have been openly critical of the cooling system. But let me say we have sold a ton of these tractors and most folks do not have an application where they are over heating and eating AC compressors. We occasionally hear from folks saying the wish it would cool the cab down further. For them we suggest tint on the windows in our 115 degree heat. But guys that are mowing in real hot conditions create the chaff that fills the radiator fins and that is where we see some issues. Even then it depends on what you are mowing.

I'm no AC expert, but that is what I have gleaned over the years. And it might be you have something else going on. I just needs to get up on my "radiator not passing airflow" soapbox every once in a while since it is such a common problem.
