So I was thinking of getting a bid to do asphalt over my concrete driveway. Not much there really but the concrete is getting bad. It's basically a double car garage width and approximately 25' long then it turns to gravel. Concrete tear out and replacement is around $5k. I think this might be a much cheaper option but not sure of the issues that may come with it. Thoughts?

The biggest issues would be if the existing concrete is heaving or settling, because that would continue and crack the asphalt in those areas. If it's all surface issues on your concrete, I think asphalt is a good option. A reputable paver will be able to give you a better idea when they see it.

Yep- concrete, asphalt or simple gravel all require a proper base. Adding something over the top of something that is failing will lead to further failure.
Kinda like painting with no prep work- looks good for awhile......

if the concrete is in good condition and stable then it should be fine....they put asphalt over concrete on highways all the time......but if the concrete is in bad condition, breaking up or settling then it would be best to remove it.......new asphalt will only be as good as the base it's being put on.......+1 on talking with a local reputable paver.........Jack

I've seen products that just go over the top of the concrete to resurface it. It's a concrete product itself so I would imagine the bond would be decent. I've never used it, but it seems like a good option and less expensive. Maybe it's just another snake-oil product...

Product is good! Used to change color or to allow stamp/design. Typically under 1/2” thick.

I have a concrete drive; my neighbor has an asphalt drive. There is no comparison in the esthetics, in my opinion. The asphalt just doesn't compare. I had mine replaced, with a faux brick edging, and it looks good. Twenty years and counting. I had several estimates, from $7000 down. The guy that did it, came back and said "It's the holidays, the homebuilders have shut down, my crew needs something for Christmas, I'll do it for $4500. I said "sold". They were professionals...took out the old concrete, did the leveling, laid the reinforcement, built the forms in one day; finished pouring and finishing the next day. I'm happy. I wouldn't have put down asphalt if it had been free...but like they say, a difference of opinion is what makes a horse race!

Concrete is much more durable for sure, it's the economics for most people.
