Those engines start really hard. On a 60 degree day, I have to glow plug mine about 35 seconds and make sure you have a big battery fully charged and place your hand throttle at half throttle then after it starts you can throttle back to let it run slower till it warms up.

You said it smokes but does not start. The color of the smoke is a good indicator of why your tractor will not start. What color is the smoke?

Blackish color I think the fuel is not being atomized enough

Is it getting enough fuel? Check the fuel filter
to see if its clogged. Also when trying to start
the engine push the throttle lever to full throttle
if it starts just quickly pull throttle to a low setting.

I'm wondering why when it quit running the fellow you
bought it from didn't fix it? Unless its not something
easy or cheap to fix. A running tractor is worth
more than a non running tractor.

he probably didn't want to replace all the worn out injectors that are letting too much/unatomized fuel in the cylinders.. maybe he just didn't know what the problem was, and thought of a big repair bill from a shop..

,it is getting too much raw fuel it is not spraying a mist it's like a stream it tries to start but instead it just puts out black smoke indicating too much fuel

Sounds like the typical loss of compression over time. The engine gets to point where it is on the cusp of not starting due to lower air charge in the cylinder (a lot of it is escaping the cylinder during compression). In turn this reduces temperature, increases black smoke as the glow plugs try to ignite the mixture (lack of oxygen) and reduces energy available from complete combustion to spin the motor up to speed for continued running. Spinning the engine faster helps as it reduces the time for the air charge to escape and the time available for heat to transfer into the cylinder head and block. That's why these will run great once started but getting them there can be difficult. A re-ring is required at a minimum. New pistons/over bore in the worst case. These engines start fairly well when the cylinders have good sealing, even down to temperatures near 0 degrees F with only glow plug assistance. It could be valve leakage. Valve adjustment is unlikely unless someone messed with it. New injector tips can help but the root cause is more likely excessive blow-by which is very common with these engines.

he needs to examine why the injectors are putting out a stream instead of a mist first, though.. it could be bad injectors, or not enough pressure to them from a worn injector pump.. these parts are similar to an oil burner with either a worn nozzle, or low pressure to the nozzles, it puts out black smoke because the fuel is not being atomized properly..
