The trailer video made me recall my drive home from work last night. I followed what I think was a 4runner or similar sized SUV pulling a trailer with a car on it. This was at night and the trailer had no working parking lights, they did work for brakes and directionals. The max speed was only 35mph but at one point it hit a bump that made it sway quite a bit which made me think the tongue weight was not correct. I did notice the front of the car was on the back of the trailer and it was a front engine car. Right after I turned off the road he stayed on I saw a police car go in the same direction with his lights on, probably noticed the lights being out.

I learned the two second rule, but that was well over 40 years ago. Prior to that it was a car length for every mile per hour. I will say that even with ABS stopping distance has probably decreased over the last couple decades, but they still need somebody to work that brake pedal.

A car length per MPH?? That’s like 1/3 mile at 70 mph for a pickup truck. And in slow speed heavy traffic I have to maintain a close following distance otherwise some other yahoo will dart in the middle.

Or is it 10mph?

it would be safe though, now wouldn't it? I no longer worry about somebody cutting in front of me, my ultimate goal is to arrive unscathed.
Or is it 10mph?
That's the one!

My wife has a 17 xc90 Volvo. It has the fancy cruise and pilot control crap. I used it in heavy traffic going to Connecticut one weekend. When it works, it is pretty nice, but when it doesn’t work it is dangerous. Actually was kinda stressful keeping my foot hovering over the brake pedal not trusting the technology. Almost better off just driving normally. What I don’t like about it is it will at times brake harder than is necessary making it uncomfortable for passengers, and when following other cars even as closely as possible it is too great a distance and people will just pull in the space anyway. Also, the pilot control doesn’t work all the time and will just stray out of the lane randomly. That is sketchy. But it is nice for taking a drink of water having to unscrew a cap for a few seconds.

This is one of the biggest issues with following at a 'correct/safe' distance. In a lot of ways... you are actually putting everyone at greater risk, out of temptation. Personally, I will be glad when everyone is using automated driving. People will be safer and it will be much faster and easier to get around. Every car will know what every other car is doing and merging bumper to bumper at 60mph will be commonplace.

You put too much faith in artificial intelligence. Even an airplane has trained pilots available for when things stray from the norm.

One British Traffic Accident Researcher said that a spike in the middle of the steering wheel would make people drive safer than all these safety features that protect the stupid.

What's wrong with 1/3 mile? That's perfect on a lightly used highway. But no. You see the group of retards in a row as if chained together!

Hey, found the guy that won't ever let anyone merge.

Just take some deep breaths, relax, and take the time to think about what you've got going on in your life. Other people are going to drive like goofballs; there's no reason to make it worse by making their maneuvers even more dangerous.
