John Deere Starting Problem

Hi Guys, Today I was stopping and restarting my tractor a lot. Making short runs with it. Then it would not start up.
My battery is old so I went and purchased a new battery.
I put the new battery in and it still did not start. No Click nothing. Idiot lights were dim. I thought I would put a charger on the new battery thinking it was low from sitting around in the store. When I tried starting it with the charger attached I would hear the clicking and the lights got bright but it still would not start.
I disconnected the charger and my idiot lights got dim and no clicking.
Can someone help me with suggestions as to what might be wrong?

Have you checked the ground connection at the frame ?

from what you are describing, you DID get a battery that is well run down, and should be tested, and exchanged at the store. a battery should never be run down so badly that the starting solenoid don't click, and the idiot lights are very dim. putting the charger on it, which brought the voltage up, confirms this.. and a bad ground connection at the frame wouldn't be affected by the charger, unless you connected the ground of the charger to the frame, instead of at the battery.. BUT, you COULD have bad connections somewhere too, any connections not clean and tight need to be fixed, and was probably the original cause of this problem.. most likely in the large, high current wires, since multiple start/stops can heat those wires up..

I agree with the 'bad connection somewhere' suggestion. Over time the vibration from the engine will loosen connections and can break multi-strand cables, such as those just beyond the connection (underneath the insulation). The most 'violent' vibration occurs during starting and shutting down the engine.

You can wiggle the wires whilst gently pulling and hopefully detect where this has happened.

OK I will check the ground at the frame first thing in the AM.
If that's not it I'll go to the connections.
