If your truck uses cables to hold the tailgate up rather than the steel straps of old, be advised they tend to collect water in the middle of the strap since it's one big U when the tailgate is up and they rust inside the cosmetic plastic coating. Using the tailgate as a shelf is risky since hitting bumps changes a heavy static load into a very heavy dynamic load. I've seen them break which is why I switched my truck over to the old style steel straps that are as strong today as they were when new decades ago.
GM did eventually switch to stainless steel cables because of the corrosion problems you mention. There was even a recall of earlier models with free replacement of the non-stainless cables.

The plastic coating was not for cosmetics, but to keep the cable from scratching the truck bed and tailgate as it curled and uncurled. Some early PU's actually used chains for the tailgate support and those too had a rubber or plastic covering.

Another one today. Was parked in a hardware store parking lot. He pulled out just like this a few minutes after I took this pic.

I see this so often up here I normally don't even take a pic anymore. Can't believe more people aren't killed by this crap.

Sigh.

Oh, and in case it's not obvious, no chains or even straps tie downs of any kind. And he got on the interstate.

Well, I guess there are no super-magnets in the trailer deck either, seeing that it has rubber tracks. Where are the Cops?

Sure it wasn't stolen like the tool boxes in the truck?

So he’s got truck tool boxes that aren’t mounted. What’s the logic behind that they’re stolen? I’m betting they’re not because most people don’t acquire a 100k ride ( $75k skid steer plus truck and trailer ) by being thief’s. At least not petty theft like stealing truck tool boxes.

Unless it was an impulse snatch. "What the heck, while we're stealing the Kubota, snag those two boxes too". To be honest, it didn't occur to me that they might be stolen, but i may be a little naive too.

Or most likely they just bought them and were hauling them home.
I don't know any LEO that sees new items in the back of a pickup and automatically assumes they were stolen.

Since it was in the middle of Menards parking lot, I would assume things were legit. I see people hauling mini excavators, tractors, utv's, and cars all the time without straps
