Never thought of that. Craigslist is a pretty good metric of what things are called in ones local area.

Since I am split between two craigslists, I search them both....results from just the farm & garden section

Bushhog......6 hits
Brushhog.....5 hits
Bush Hog......66 hits
Brush Hog.....46 hits
Rotary cutter....8 hits

With or without the "R".....don't really matter and they are used interchangeably around here. But rarely does one use the term rotary cutter.

I always tell people when searching.....to search ALL 5 terms. And when selling.....use ALL 5 in the ad.

Good idea. I tried it as one word:

What is it if you go 2 words? and how may hits does "rotary cutter" yield?

I grew up in northern Indiana and it was always called a brush hog. Here in central Oklahoma it is mostly called a brush hog. I just typed "brush hog" in the search box on craigslist, it showed 245. Typed "bush hog", it showed 34, most of those were Bush Hog brand.

The first one was a disc mower for cutting hay, the second was a rotary trim cutter tool and only 4 showed brush cutter pictures. I didn't click the other ads to see what kind of cutter they were selling.

Its amazing how subtle differences in terms are used in different parts of the country.

Shows how important it is to search (and list if selling) to use all appropriate terms.

Sure, some people do that.....but you show 245 hits for "brush hog"....

And you are potentially NOT seeing 134 hits for "bushhog" "bush hog" or "brushhog"

Use the term brush hog in my area and nobody would know what you are talking about. A Coke can be any almost any soft drink and Bushog can be any rotary brush cutter.

Got to love typos. My CL couldn't pull up anything for bushog.

Your statistics are interesting but need more research. Smart posters will put several of the terms in their ad. And you probably won't turn up many Bushog.
But Search is not always your friend, the guy who advertised my B7610 advertised it as a Kabota. When he sold it to me he listed the serial # of the LA352.

Not really any more research to do.

If I am looking for a cutter.....I search ALL 5 ways I posted. And all 5 search strings yield different results.

Sure there is some overlap.....where sellers are smart enough to include multiple variations of terminology or spelling....but in general....searching many ways gets the best results.

If I am selling something.....lets say I wanted to sell my woods DS96.....my ad would read something as follows...

Woods DS96 bushhog rotary cutter

This is an 8' twin spindle brushhog The deck is solid and gearboxes tight. Overall this brush hog is in great shape. Only selling because I am looking at buying a bigger bush hog

..........................................................

I try to incorporate ALL just within the body of the ad. So I dont have to have a bunch of random words at the bottom under *keyword*

Yes, the language used regionally is fascinating. Just look at threads on gravel, there are so many terms for essentially the same material.

Here like others have noted "bush hog" is the only name for a rotary cutter and a Coke is any type of soda.

Anyone call it a rough cut mower besides me?
