VW pickup?

How about putting a battery in it and driving it in local parades or car shows??? I'm sure many people would enjoy seeing it and talking to you about it!!!! Around here the vehicles that get the most attention are original, dents, rust and all.

That would be fun, but I am 77, and only stay there, at my old family home, 3 months each year, so I have lots of other stuff to do/fix.
I prefer playing with my tractors, or digging clams.
I could drive my 8N Ford in a parade there though, and it would be a big hit.
8N's are very rare in the area.

I think the VW really needs to go on E-Bay, as well as my 1902 doctor buggy.
They will likely both bring good money, and right now they just sit, and take up space.
I could add a few bucks and buy two more tractors, to fill up their spaces (that ain't really gonna happen).

I've contacted VW trying to urge them to bring the Amarok pickup here, but there response was they had no interest because there is too much competition in north America in the pickup class. And they admitted the price would also be to high to be competitive.

I've had Superduty's but don't need one any more. I used to pull my travel trailer behind my dump truck when I worked out of town.

But i would have liked a fuel efficient little truck like the Amarok, because I like my Jetta and Tiguan very much and all I need is enough cargo box to put my 50 or 100 gallon fuel transfer tank in, for hauling fuel to my equipment.

I see a lot of the VW pickups when we go to England, along with the Toyota Hilux, etc.
Nice little mid-sized unit, especially with the diesel. In North America, it’s all about displacement, payload and towing. I’d be fine with a truck the size they “used to be”. I wish there was a domestic market for a compact truck with a small diesel. I don’t need to tow the Queen Mary or carry a ton of rock. I want to go to the dump and the lumberyard every once in a while...maybe tow my fishing boat. Most of the Big Three offerings are super-overkill for what I need. And frankly, I don’t need to compensate.. I’m OK with the size of my manhood.

Not saying anything other than Detroit and Madison Avenue have pretty much gone the Bigger is Better advertising route with trucks.

A compact truck would have been nice for that. If you had a a set of ramps you could have loaded it in the back of the dump truck.

Problem with all these compact trucks from Ford, GM, Toyota is they all are as pricey as full size and they get as bad or worse fuel mileage.

Yep, when you can get high teens and low 20s for gas mileage out of a 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup and these small trucks are only a couple of MPG better (if that) it will be a hard sell.

Back in 1981' my new bride sold her fairly new Toyota Celica and bought her new hubby a VW pickup, the gas version. Being the farm/ranch kid I was, I was flabbergasted. But, being a newly wed, I bit my lip and said thanks. That "little truck" got about 35 miles per gallon as I remember. Wasn't a bad grocery getter but worthless to haul much over 500 lbs.

Would I like to have it back, yes and no. It was great for 95% of the things needed and absolutely worthless for hauling anything over the 500 to 600 weight. The problem with going back to that VW pick up (or another just like it) is, when a repair part is needed (and that will eventually happen) there are very few parts still available. Yeah, I'd like to see a small diesel new version hit the market but I darn sure would be cautious of the original version. My two Dodge Diesels are used for heavier transporting. I could load a (VW sized PU) into the back and have a spare.

My Ranger gets GREAT mileage. If I'm really, REALLY careful I can almost get... 17 MPG.
My company Silverado gets 17+ without even trying.

Three years ago, I sold my (very nice) 1986 GMC Jimmy (6.2L) Diesel with 175,000 miles, on E-Bay. I had paid $8000 for it used, in 1990.
29 years since new, It sold for $8200 on E-Bay. Selling fees were $200. I came out exactly even, after owning and driving it for 25 years.
The ideal situation played out for me on E-Bay.
A buyer in Germany wanted it, and a buyer in the Bahamas wanted it. They battled back, and forth, and the Bahamas buyer won.
He hired a rollback to pick it up in New England, drive it to Miami, and then put it on a ship to Nassau.

For any who are not believers in E-Bay....just maybe, you should think about that again.
I would have sold it outright for $5000, and considered it a very fair deal.

The world needs another big pickup like we need a hole in the head. Where's another 1995-1999 Tacoma size? Or another one like the Dodge Rampage? Even another one like the original VW pickup with diesel engine?

Screw the regulators. Bring back our small pickups.

I like my VW's. Too bad my dealer sucks. Only problems I have had with the product itself is the Jetta always seems to need sway bar links and the wheel bearings went at 100,000 KM. Tiguan has been good so far. Needs a strut mount bushing at 105,000 miles.

Only other problems are all the damage the dealer has done to it every time I went for service. Now I have my own lift and am back to doing it myself.

That sounds like my ranger too, and if i want it to get up to hiway speed, i have to plan ahead.

No, pickups in general are a rarity in Holland. Ive seen the supervisor of the highway project near my home drives one, looked under it, and saw that some kind of 4wd or hi/lo solenoid which is too near the underside for my likings. (Underbody covers usually dont last on my Volvo sedan either, let alone if i drove 4wd)

They have independent front suspension and a live rear axle, similar to the new VW Crafter van. Because the Crafter is offered with 2.0 biturbo TDI and the Amarok with V6 TDI only, you know its not aimed at the regular construction worker, but the self employed entrepeneur or the jobsite supervisor.

Specs are 165, 204, or 226hp 3.0 V6 TDI, rear wheel drive, manual select fourwheeldrive, or permanent 4wd with Torsen LS mid diff, 7700lbs tow rating and 2200lbs load capacity.

Maybe you would consider $1500 fair, $2000 max, but even my mechanic said I should expect to get at least $4500.
There were at least 5 other bidders in the mix above that $4500, before it got to the $8200 final price.
One bidder called me at $4500 and asked if I would sell for $6000, but I explained that I had decided to let the auction run.
I was amazed, and very pleased.
