I built my dinning room table top from 1 3/4" #2 knotty pine. I was in the same boat as to the finish. I wanted to be able to put a sweaty glass on the top and not worry about water rings on the table. I decided on 4 coats of marine exterior varnish. I figured if varnished boats could withstand being out all summer in the rain/elements, it would work for a table top. I don't remember if there was a first coat or if I reduced the first coat. Top looks great after 3-4 years. But being a true oil based varnish, it is ambering. ie deepening/darkening the color. Poly will keep the wood's more natural color. Jon

I did the same as you 4 years ago for a bathroom vanity made out of redwood. Still looks great today. I'm not as much concerned about the water rings as I am about dents & dings. My preference for finish look would be marine finish but the epoxy coating will give me a much harder finish to protect the softer redwood.

I agree on the hardness of the epoxy to protect from dings. My top being pine is soft, but I can live with possible dings as long as the finish is not broken. I am enjoying your build. Everything looks great. Jon

If the edge wasn't so irregular that might be a good option. Would not havr thought of that.

Have you asked the glass company what it would cost to cut the glass to fit the shape of the log? I work with several glass companies and cutting it wouldn't be very difficult.

You can also add a bonding agent to your mortar mix to help. I haven't found the need to, just a straight type S mortar. The correct moisture content is key. Too dry and it wont stick, too wet and the stone is going to slide.

Got some help this evening to set the bar top. I'm looking forward to getting my pendent lights installed and some epoxy on the bar top to finish it off.

Thank you. I think I'm going to extend the corner about 3ft toward the wall as well. It will help close in the corner and hide the work area a bit from the side. Going to run the height about 6-8" lower than the wood top and cover with some black granite. This will make a nice side area for staging drinks as well.

Eddy I had a guy come today and do a sample epoxy coating over the 1ft piece of scrape I cut off the end of the slab. I'm sold on the epoxy now. The color that is going to come out of this top with epoxy is incredible.

Lot's of moving parts right now. I have basically been working until I'm too tired to be productive, then sleeping for a few hours and starting the process all over again. We have a wedding and reception on Saturday that was booked prior to our decision to remodel. We let them know the inside timberframe area and wedding patio would be ready but not the outside finishes or house upstairs. Now I'm doing everything I can to keep my end of the bargain. After this weekend we have 4 more weeks to finish the rest.

First coat of epoxy was put on thr bartop today. Getting the cracks and knot holes filled turned out to be a challenge. This slab was really thirsty and still not sure where it all went.

I should have the windows trimmed out tomorrow. I've finished all of the jam extensions and made the remaining trim pieces yesterday. Last coat of poly is drying tonight so I can trim out tomorrow.

Chairs arrived last Thursday. My kids don't know it yet but they have a pretty good chore ahead of them helping dad unwrap them all. Hopefully I have some finshed window pics to post tomorrow.

The slab was much lighter than I expected. We moved it with 4 but I think 2 people could have lifted it. I imagine it weighs a bit more now given the amount of epoxy to on/in it. I'll get some pics when I can. I finished trimming out windows and happy with how they turned out. Heading back in shortly to stain boards to trim out the two wood entry doors. I have two cased openings to trim out then lots of cleanup on the inside. I need to get some outside lighting installed by Friday.

Thanks guys. I have two cased openings with old casing that may have to stay until after this event but other than that we are going to make it. I need to get some string lights hung tomorrow so I have some outside lighting for this weekend.
