So folks here seem to know the details of hailing things. Is there a spec for hauling cut/split firewood? Should it be tarped or held in place somehow? Every time I see a load of wood being hauled it's just piled high in the back of a dump bed truck.

This is about the best you can do but I don’t usually do that good a job. IMG_0468.JPG This is more like what I usually do.IMG_0782.JPG

Oklahoma here. That second load would have to have a net or tarp over it or probably get a ticket in my area. Depending on the mood of the highway patrol. Last few years things are starting to get pretty picky at times.
I stuck some side boards on my gooseneck a while back. Hauling horse stall leavings out to a garden. Stoped for fuel and a highway patrol pulled in next to me for fuel and gave me a friendly heads up.
The dump grounds in this part of the state will not let you pull INTO the dump ground if you do not have your load tarped or strapped. Does not matter what your hauling. You have to pull over to the side and get legal then they will let you pull thru the gates and onto the scales. Also require you to have hardhat and safety vest on or you cannot exit the vehicle while on their property.

Each piece must be strapped down separately. If longer than 16 inches-two straps.

That second pic is usually what you see around here. Man they seem to be picky in SW WA. :D

Exceptions to the specific requirements (Section 3.1.1)

From the FMCSA handbook...
>

The following types of logs are not covered by the specific logs requirements:
畢ogs unitized by banding or other comparable means. [Secure according to general cargo securement requirements (Section 2).]
畢oads of no more than four processed logs. [Secure according to general cargo securement requirements (Section 2).]
彦irewood, stumps, debris, other short logs, and longer logs. [Transport in a vehicle or container enclosed on both sides, the front, and the rear and strong enough to contain them.]
>
If you think that firewood is bad, go watch the trucks pulling into your local scrap yard. Besides the scary loads, it can be difficult to tell which is the load, and which is the haul vehicle.

Cool, so as long as front, back and sides. I know what you mean about metal, comical at times but with steel so cheap I rarely see them now. The local scrap guy won't even take steel anymore.

I have an irregular piece of commercial fish net, the type used to winch aboard a ton or so. It's a fragment from a damaged commercial net. I got one 4x9 piece out of it plus some small pieces. Ideal for what I carry in the 4x8 trailer.

Does anyone know the source for more? Either used, to cut down, or new?

I've often thought that a piece of chain link fence would do, with straps over the top.

What percentage arrives at the customer's? :)

I haven’t lost more that a wheel barrel load off 50 dump truck loads and that was all across my gated entrance. It’s really pretty secure.

That’s too sharp for my liking. It’s likely to fray straps.

That might be good for some loads but I'm just as likely to have cardboard boxes or furniture, of irregular shape, covered by a tarp then the commercial fishnet. This can accommodate any odd shape. Usually clipping the front corners of the tarp, and all corners of the net, into carabiners at the corners of the trailer, plus a couple of straps across the load, makes a quick and secure tiedown.

There are probably thousands of others in looking for the same. Keep thinking. Who knows, you could just make your next billion with it.

That is a cool idea. How about E-bay?

This scrap of commercial fishnnet really is ideal because it doesn't stretch and has incredible strength.

The elastic 'spiders' sold for the same purpose seem useless to me. Someone arrived at our mining camp way up in the woods missing a sleeping bag that had slipped out of the cartop elastic net on his Land Cruiser. Since then I've never considered buying one.

You can buy pickup bed netting that is springy and lightweight and will contain loose cargo. I'm sure Summit Racing would have something like that and it's a Toyota factory option item. It looks like a wider spaced piece of fishing net.
