I think there's an earlier VW Bug version of this.

There was a cute photo - or realistic drawing. I think it was VW tiretracks in new snow as the VW arrives at the municipal plow shed.

Added: here's the TV ad you likely saw. 1964. I never saw that, didn't have TV. I'm still looking for the magazine ad I saw.

When you think about it the vehicle was a smaller wheelbase both width and length so hard to high center, relatively high clearance, tall narrow tires to cut through easily, and engine weight over the drive wheels. Now if they just had a defroster so you could see.

...And wiring connectors that would stay connected. If you didn't occasionally pull the wires, polish them, then screw down the crush-clamps again you could lose headlights going down a dark road. Scary.

After a snow storm, I remember my Dad telling of the time him and another Veterinarian using a VW bug to get out to some of the farms. I remember him laughing and telling how they would come up to good sized snow drift, look things over, back up a ways and take a run up on over the snow drift, sliding along the skid plate to the next open space between snow drifts. The next year, my Dad go one of the first Ford Broncos, 1965.

From the front view, that VW looks to be the same year as my dad's 1981 (tan) 5spd VW diesel pickup.
My dad has been gone for 37 years now, but I still have the VW diesel pickup.
It has been stored on blocks, in one of my buildings for 25 years.
Has under 60K miles, and is in near perfect original condition, with a black topper.
Should take pix, and list it on E-Bay, but I never seem to get around to it.

Got a 1902 doctors buggy too. Want to buy it?

I remember winters w/ our '67 Beetle, did fairly well except so light in the front it wouldn't turn very well on packed snow, and braking ALWAYS done with the parking break if you wanted any hope of steering while braking, but yes tall narrow tires w/ lots of weight works, which is why I loved the Duramax - would load the bed w/ some weight and never worried about winter weather, I kept tall tires (85 series) on it.

Funny, I had read that thread and had seen that image. Heavier built trailers are always heavier than you think. A factory built trailer usually has its empty weight on the mfg tag. Christmas Eve this year this was my load. Gross weight was 28,600, 62 international was 12,600, truck and trailer 15,980, and my truck 9800. That puts my 20+4 trailer weighing 6k ish. I had a 3hr trip with it, I truly didn稚 think the international weighed that much. Whopping 7.5mpg on that run at 70.

Tow vehicle looks a bit too much down in the rear.
Did you do any tongue weight calculation/measurement?
If your tongue weight was 1598 (min.= 10% of loaded trailer) did you have a hitch rated for 1598 lbs. tongue weight?
I do not believe that there is any hitch sold, that is rated for that much tongue weight, for your make/model truck.

He has a gooseneck hitch, not bumper pull. They routinely have tongue weight ratings north of 7000# on 1-ton trucks. But even if it was a bumper-pull they make class V hitches with tongue weights in the mid 2000's. Also, though I don't know what the recommended tongue weight is for a gooseneck since I don't use one I'm pretty sure the 10% value isn't valid for them.

What do you need those tall tires for in Missouri?

At least he had a duallyView attachment 535245 this dump truck weighed 14 ish so 20k would be about right. I have since upgraded trucks...

Do you have a Class A license? If the GVWR on the truck and trailer is above 26,001lbs it’s illegal unless you have a class A license. Non-CDL Class A

Or - maybe memories from long before that are still rolling around in my head. :)

Loved that book along with the steam shovel and house one. Childhood books I shared with my kids and will with grandkids someday.

Katy and the big snow is one of my favorites.

Rule of thumb for goosenecks is 15%-20% pin weight. But Some can get heavier too.

I confess to liking driving places... the more off the beaten path the better.

When I was going to a mountain hut in Austria the only two wheel drive vehicles to make it were bugs and buses... all of the little front wheel drive cars simply could not get enough traction...

The military used a military version of the VW Thing for quite a while in Europe... only two wheel drive.
