There was a cute photo - or realistic drawing. I think it was VW tiretracks in new snow as the VW arrives at the municipal plow shed.

Added: here's the TV ad you likely saw. 1964. I never saw that, didn't have TV. I'm still looking for the magazine ad I saw.

When you think about it the vehicle was a smaller wheelbase both width and length so hard to high center, relatively high clearance, tall narrow tires to cut through easily, and engine weight over the drive wheels. Now if they just had a defroster so you could see.

...And wiring connectors that would stay connected. If you didn't occasionally pull the wires, polish them, then screw down the crush-clamps again you could lose headlights going down a dark road. Scary.

After a snow storm, I remember my Dad telling of the time him and another Veterinarian using a VW bug to get out to some of the farms. I remember him laughing and telling how they would come up to good sized snow drift, look things over, back up a ways and take a run up on over the snow drift, sliding along the skid plate to the next open space between snow drifts. The next year, my Dad go one of the first Ford Broncos, 1965.

From the front view, that VW looks to be the same year as my dad's 1981 (tan) 5spd VW diesel pickup.
My dad has been gone for 37 years now, but I still have the VW diesel pickup.
It has been stored on blocks, in one of my buildings for 25 years.
Has under 60K miles, and is in near perfect original condition, with a black topper.
Should take pix, and list it on E-Bay, but I never seem to get around to it.

Got a 1902 doctors buggy too. Want to buy it?

I remember winters w/ our '67 Beetle, did fairly well except so light in the front it wouldn't turn very well on packed snow, and braking ALWAYS done with the parking break if you wanted any hope of steering while braking, but yes tall narrow tires w/ lots of weight works, which is why I loved the Duramax - would load the bed w/ some weight and never worried about winter weather, I kept tall tires (85 series) on it.
