I will never be without my 30" logrite pickaroon when I'm processing wood. What a back saver. I ordered a couple of Peavey pulp hooks last week hoping to use them on this job, but apparently Peavey makes them to order. :(

I agree, what a back saver, should have got one years ago. Had to look up what a pulp hook is. I have some hay hooks in the barn, looks like they would do the same thing?

Question - I have my wood in plastic Ropaks (skid boxes) and the problem I have is them freezing down. There is a lot of weight when I get up to 3/4 cord of hardwood in them and then it rains or melts and they freeze down and I cannot break them loose as they are about at the limit of my little Ford.

Also - i like to cut one year and let them sit until the next year which means they make even better contact with the ground.

I am looking for suggestions on how to deal with this.

My wood is in little half "face cord" racks, but they are always set on lumber "stringers". You could set your pallets down on 4x4s either in a row front to back or do it side to side. I do it both ways depending where I'm storing the racks. Or if the mud isn't terribly deep you could use 2x lumber and once it sinks in a little you can drive over it with the tractor without wrecking anything but it will still give you that lift to keep it from freezing in.

Worth a shot. I've never used a pulp hook, but they aren't too pricey, and I make a lot of firewood, so I figured I'd buy a couple based on some trusted recommendations. I was really hoping they'd be here by now, but no luck.

I bought a Stubai log hookaroon w/mini axehead. It was more but I liked the idea of the axehead for those pesky stuck pieces that are just enough you can't pull apart, & feel silly tossing back up on the splitter for another pass. I also bout a pair of Timber-Tuff 16" log tongs. I don't know how I worked without them. Both very handy & make the work less painful the next morning.

How do you use the log tongs - from an FEL?

I have 2 different sets. The large skidding tongs I use either off the FEL or the log arch. But the 16" are hand held, with one molded handle for picking up the rounds to put on the splitter. Can't pick up anything too big, but you don't have to bend over to get both hands under the log to pick it up. These work like a skidding tong, but for your hand. Available from lots of places, but I went cost effective to try them out, worth every penny & I don't think I'll need to replace any time soon.

I use mine off of the backhoe to get the logs in position for the fel.

I Have been thinking about off of my carryall frame on my 3 pt - just back over them and lower over them and then lift and off I go, i.e. no getting off the tractor to hook a chain up to a log to pull it. I can see off a backhoe would be very handy.

I will look into those - the bending over to pick up is what gets to me anymore.

They weren't overly expensive on the ol' interweb. Look around as some have different features. Some have a release handle which might be handy. I just give them a twist & they fall off. The points on these aren't too sharp, but grip the log fine. I thought about sharpening them, but thought I'd end up cutting myself. They work on soft wood end to end, but best around the diameter, especially on really hard wood. They say 16" but I have picked up bigger if the bark was intact. They also extend your reach a little, so pulling off the pile is a little easier.
