Seafoam

   / Seafoam #371
I have never hydro locked an engine by pouring SeaFoam directly in the carb or through the brake booster vacuum line.

About 10 years ago I started using Sea Foam in automatic transmissions a few hundred miles before a total bucket flush in the drive way. It will make the ATF go dark. We just did this with the 2010 Subaru Forester that we just picked up with 105K miles. It was up shifting very well but when driving it in manual mode the forced down shifts where delayed then hard. After a few hundred miles I also added Archoil AR9100 to the transmission and now it is shifting better up and down. Yesterday we took a line loose at the transmission cooler and pumped the old out into a bucket by starting the engine until air bubbles appeared then refilled and repeated.

Tonight I put a can of Sea Foam into the gas tank and topped it off.

This Forester is kind of a test bed since I never drove one before and because of their EyeSight system I am interested in a new one. Buying one 8 years old with over 100K miles should let me learn something about Subaru long term quality. Yes I am already in love with it. :)

While we have been using Archoil 9100 for a while (just ordered and received our 5th gallon) this is the first vehicle to get it in the engine, differentials, auto transmission and power steering.

Gale - you use the Trans Tune version, correct ?

Sea Foam Sales Company - Hydra Trans Tune

Rgds, D.

This last time I just used the regular Sea Foam but per the local NAPA store owner the son of the developer of Sea Foam at a tradeshow said they were basically the same but that the Trans Tune was a bit heavier on cleaner in the mix. Since they use the same spec sheet for both it is my "guess" the red dye is the main difference. :)

This was the first time I added Archoil AR9100 to an automatic transmission and both differentials in in Subaru. So far so good. I am using the manual shift mode for engine braking at most stops and now the delayed hard downshifts are replaced by fast smooth down shifts. From 2 to 1 I am getting a full release from 2nd gear (a fast blip down on the tach) before 1st gear engages.

The computer flags when it is OK speed wise to down/up shift plus it locks out a shift until the computer specs are met. Still this seems something a 16 vs 66 year old way of driving an old car. :)

I used Super Tech 75w90 semi synthetic gear oil in the differentials meeting the GL5 specs per Subaru and went with the ATF they named in the 2010 owners manual since I am not a risk taker. :)

On the Seafoam variants, I've suspected similar composition. Partly, I just wanted to highlight to people new to SF that there was more than one product.

Sounds like you are having fun with You Are a Bus

Yes the current owners of the SeaFoam brand are really expanding it beyond just the SeaFoam product from 50-70 years ago.

And yes I am having fun. The first 60 years I colored within the lines very neatly. For as far as I get in the next 60 years I plan to color how every I darn well please. :)

In 2014 my health was crashing fast and I needed help just getting in and out of vehicles and even getting dressed some days. The doctors wanted me to start on Enbrel injections for pain management and my brain and wife (pharmacist) were saying NO! On a hunch I cut out all added sugars/sweeteners and all forms of all grains.

In just 30 days after leaving the sugar and grains Oct 2014 my pain level of 7-8 had dropped to 2-3 and today is 1 or less most of the time. I stopped trying to lose weight and only improve my total health. I have been down 50 pounds for over two years now yet keeping my face stuffed all of the time. I just more or less (no counting or measuring) keep my daily carb intake about 50 grams daily. That cuts out the processed/junk food options .

It seems to be reversing my cataracts and my blood labs are much improved plus I am moving much better and can now walk as far as I wish without resting. Below is one example of a case study similar to my new way of eating.

Vascular Plaque Reduction with Ketogenic Diet - A Case Study - DocMuscles

While I may not live to be 110 and walking and talking the entire way I am going to give it my best shot. My son set me up a blog at ketolivewell dot com but I have not updated it much over the last few months. The supplement and vitamin lists are ones that I have tried on myself and that came from about 10 cancer prevention/reversal protocols mainly from Europe and Asia. I think prevention is key in my case. Not having to start on Enbrel injections due to managing my pain by diet I see key in my personal case.

As far as the Subaru goes I like their driver aids that come with their Eyesight optional equipped vehicles. I figure the 8 year old Forester with 105K miles will give me a good view into their safety and longivity features is worth the $6K purchase price. Going full bore with Archoil AR9100 usage in all of its lube oils is exciting to see if it helps with me dogging the old car daily.

This is my first AWD car and have never owned a 4WD and just one front wheel drive. This 100% active AWD is Awesome to staying in control in sharp curves, etc. When the wife and I retire I may get two new Subarus with EyeSight if this old test bed Forester exceeds my expectations. I wish there were a local dealer but there are three (IL, IN and TN) under 100 miles from the house.

The 1976 265 MF needed attention so I broke down and sent it to a local shop instead of tearing into it ourself. The son is in Diesel College now so his free time is short plus I need it back to get bush hogged up before winter. He told me last week they are talking about self driving tractor trailer rigs in testing in Utah. They have a driver in them is required in this testing phase of the robotic driving systems in testing.

Appreciate the updates... none of us are getting younger and diet can be a deciding factor...

The Ketogenic Diet with high fat is how the farm side of the family lives.. they work hard and 7 days a week with a Dairy Farm.

My Grandparents and Great Uncles ate all wrong according to the current thinking... LOTS of fat even ladled on at times...

Just about zero on processed anything... all from scratch and organic before there was such a word...

When 80 and 90 year olds are still working each day and the only time Grandpa say a Doctor professionally in the last 60 years was do a farm accident with log splitter.... makes one wonder about cutting out the fat...

I use Seafoam and it has improved several small engines in equipment of unknown origin or sitting around.

Never tried it in automobiles...

My wife's car is a Prius by Toyota, 2005 model, with 155k miles. It started using oil recently. It was not leaking anywhere. I change the PCV valve that had not been touched (book says change every 30k) ;)
We were leaving on a trip so I dumped about 20 ounces of Seafoam in the crankcase...
We went down to Alabama coast, I checked the oil, a little dirty, same level when we left the house???
Headed back home, got to Natchez, I checked oil, it was very dirty, same level :)
Stopped at a 10 minute oil change place and told them to put good synthetic oil and a filter change on it...
That Toyota has stopped using oil!!!! :)

That's very interesting about the diet you all are talking about, im going to check it out, thanks.

I found that im sensitive to wheat and corn makes me sick. All those years of eating both, i thought i was dying. Walking from the car a couple yards to the door and out of breath, getting sick all the time. I've cut them both out and am starting to remove any processed carbs, including simple sugars and i keep feeling better and better.

Ok, back to seafoam, there's a guy on youtube, Project Farm, and he's burning and testing all kinds of things in in small gas engines, then takes them apart and show what the results are. He has a test he did with seafoam that was pretty interesting.

WOW! that was a major dose of SeaFoam but it sounds like it perhaps freed up sticking rings. Saturn had this issue and some of the 2011+ Subaru's are reporting oil burning issues. I suspect ring-grove build up may be the common thread in these cases.

It is good to know the time line that it took the SeaFoam to do its thing in your case. I have used it in the fuel, engine and ATF successful.

Thanks for reporting your SeaFoam experience. It will not fix cracked heads and holes in pistons but I have seen in resolve/prevent crud related machine issues.

I did the first oil change in this new to us 2010 Subaru Forester that came with 105K miles but with new head gaskets, plugs, water pump and timing belt 2K miles earlier just because the oil was getting darker due to our Archoil AR9100 usage. I do think dumping in a can of SeaFoam right before an oil change gives a better drain out of build up about 100% of the time.

[Used Sta-bil for years and it is great for keeping gas up to a year, and I have also used Seafoam. I do know the Sta-Bil works and has an easy 1 oz measuring system per 5 gal of gas. I 32 oz I believe it is does me all summer with some left over. Only good for 1 year and the effects start to diminish so I pick another up at WM. Both are good but Sta-Bil is cheaper.
