Engine began knocking and blowing light blue smoke, engine oil level dropped from full to half.
Tractor has 1700 hrs. 21 years old. Any thoughts on possible problem?

What is your mechanical skill level? up for doing any wrenching on your diesel engine?

Has the oil and filter being regularly changed with the proper oil and filter ? Was the oil level between add and full ? Was the tractor being operated on a hill?

Yes followed JD maintenance recommendations. Oil & filter were changed in June of this year. Oil level was at full after changing. After problem started checked oil level and this is when i noticed oil level between add and full. No signs of leaks. I was driving on level area when problem started.

Those little Yanmar diesel engines should have the valves checked every 1000 hours. Doubt this is problem related, but it never hurts to check them.

I put some fuel cleaner in the tank. Left it set and fired it up today. Runs like it should.
