Talk to me about owning a Dump Truck

What is your baby dump truck? My not fully grown up dump truck has definitely earned its keep. IMG_0246.JPG I've had 9k in the back of that poor truck and it handles it pretty good. 6k is no problem.

I've seen those hauling a pallet of clay targets which is over a ton. They're a lot more useful than the average side by side. And they're street legal unless I'm mistaken.

I chose the older dump truck route-85 Ford LN 700. Avoided the CDL issue by licensing it agricultural use only (WA seems to be a bit more liberal in the AG exemption application).

It has been very useful but the size does mean lots of trips to the pit. I generally load to a few thousand pounds under GVW as the 8.2l DD isn't exactly a power monster.

A trailer just wouldn't be as useful for me but I certainly could see the argument for going the dump trailer route.

Some shots of my baby dump...

IMG_20170811_151600_273.jpg
This was actually 4000lbs of road base gravel... I wanted 5k, but the lady running the loader said my springs were too flat, and she wouldn't put more on. (I've easily had 6000lbs on it around our sub, cleaning ditches. The springs flatten, but it isn't on the stops, and they aren't going to break...) Then she charged me for 6000lbs, which is their "minimum" truck charge. The gravel yard is only 4 miles from our community, but I won't be going to that one anymore, at least not with this truck...

IMG_20170811_151831_185.jpg
The strap across the tailgate is to allow me to tailgate spread the gravel. It worked really well, actually. No need for chains rattling around, no more than I'll be doing this...

This little truck has been so useful that I'll probably not get rid of it for a long while. That said, I have not stopped thinking about a larger truck...

And the other day I bought one. :) The business next door retired their very first truck. I had mentioned being interested in it a long time ago, but getting their body off it took longer than they thought.
GMC7000.jpg

It's a '81 GMC 7000, and has been well cared for. GVW 23,160lb, 366 gasser, 5+2, dual tanks, no rust at all. It also came a lot of parts, including good traction tires, a freshly rebuilt 366 long block, several PTO's and pumps, alternator, brake booster... The engine in it now only has 20-30k miles on it. If plugs and wires cure the slight miss that it has, I'll probably sell off the rebuilt longblock. It's proably worth almost what I paid for the truck... I'll find a PTO and pump that works for my needs, and sell off the rest of those too.

I found a 14' bed with drop sides off a 5-ton military truck that I'll be mounting as a dump.

I also found a killer deal on a 10' belly scraper blade. Needs two cylinders, but otherwise new.
s-l1600.jpg

The plow is in excellent condition, but missing all truckside stuff. I can make the mount, and a controller and harness aren't that much. Doubt I'll bother with lights, since they end up at the same height as the ones on the truck, or a little lower...

I checked insurance, and it is ~$500/year commercial through Progressive. As the empty weight of the truck is under 16,000lb, I can register it as a standard truck, rather than having to register it as a commercial vehicle, where you pay based on weight and mileage. $280/year vs. $500+, so that's nice.

Without selling anything, I'll have about $3500 into the dump truck. I paid $2k for the scraper, and $1500 for the plow. I'll probably have another $1k into getting them mounted and working. I'll sell off the extra stuff that I don't need.

I'll probably do a build-up thread of some sort here...

I have a '94 Isuzu NPR 1 ton with a 14' dump bed. 30" steel sides. GVW 13250. Weights 7200 empty. Great for hauling brush or a yard or so of gravel/sand/fill. No CDL and runs on gas. I occasionally pull a 7k trailer with tractor on it. Doubt the DOT guy even gives me a second look.

Update on my C70... I bought a 9' Western Heavyweight plow for it and made a mount. (Sorry, no pics)

I also chopped 39" out of the wheelbase and 18" off the tail so it'll work with the 14' bed I found...
Missing 39"... The frame had been extended 15" when the truck was new, so I got all that mess out...
IMG_20171230_131812_005.jpg

Sucked back together and prepped for welding. The actual frame is the inner, and it has an outer "liner" overlaid on the top and side.
IMG_20171230_170711_330.jpg

The liner welds are 12" either side of the frame weld, so it should be plenty strong. There's quite a few bolts holding the two together as well. I'm not worried, given the hack jobs I've seen going down the road for hundreds of thousands of miles...

I picked this 5-ton military truck dropside bed up last Friday. Hoist should arrive this week Thurs or Friday and I'll mate it all up and wire and plumb it and I'll have me a dump truck!!!
(The bed is back about 10" farther than it'll sit when it's all together, just where it landed when I picked it up...
IMG_20180119_164411_234.jpg

It'll be none too soon when it's done... I need to get hauling gravel for the driveway so we can get out to the barn this winter without tracking sticky clay onto our primary driveway... Plus it's going to earn it's keep doing snow plow duty.

The insurance ended up only being ~$28, including coverage for plowing, and registration $180. It's registered as a "truck", not by weight. (In CO, if it's under 16k curb weight, it doesn't have to be commercial weight plated.) That should still allow me to haul up to door tag GVW, which is 23k. The truck with no bed was 8k, and with bed and scraper should be 12-13k, so that's pretty good.

Hopefull I can manage to get it painted all one color this summer. :)

When I lived where there was a lot more snow than I see now, I bought an IH 1800 345 gasser with a ten foot plow. It was factory rated for 26k but had air brakes. Although I tagged it with farm plates, I never once had it on the road except to deliver it to the next buyer. During the two years I owned it, I think I may have had to hang the plow on once which was a good thing because the beast did not have power steering.

I might have paid about 750 for it and sold it for about that after moving many loads of fill around the property. When I bought it, the tailgate was gone but the seller had another that needed a little welding on the hinges to make it fit. That and I rebuilt the carb. Though ugly, it would have been pretty much road worthy if I had not had to go to far but I just never bothered. If I needed some material, I had a contractor friend with some tri-axles that would make short work out of bringing it.

I also have had a sixteen foot tandem dually dump that would challenge my 12V Dodge if I loaded it up. My FL70 would pull it just fine though.

Only the op can decide if it's worth it to have this kind of equipment around. Legal and safe should come before if you can afford it.

my take on Dump trucks versus trailers (CONFUSION)

Still have the old GMC 7000 dump but extended family bought a new 5th wheel dump trailer and i agreed to sell my 1/2 of the truck to pay part of the cost of the new trailer.

Not sure where it stands now, since the truck has not sold, I may just try and buy the other 1/2 ownership of the 7000 if nobody offers an acceptable price for the GMC.

Then again there is a Whole lot less upkeep to deal with on a dump trailer- And it is New.
The other problem is gearing, 7000 has 7.17 cogs and it is really screaming the detroit at 45 mph
