I have an older JD 272 Grooming mower that appears to be leaking gear lube into the belt area. My mower's gearbox is manufactured by Curtis. I don't believe Curtis replacements are any longer available. I was looking at a 272 listed on eBay that has a gearbox made by Comer in Italy. If replacing the seal on the vertical shaft of my Curtis is not doable for any reason, would a Comer gearbox be a viable replacement for my old gearbox? And are the Comer gearboxes good?

The seal(s) for your Curtis should be obtainable from any good local 'Bearing & Seal' distributor.

The Comer boxes are standard equipment these days and used by many manufacturers of mowers/implements. Nothing wrong with them.

You could do corn grease in the gear box...

I replaced the oil in my flail mower gearbox with pourable grease when it started leaking. Paid $100 for the mower & new seals were going to be $70... Lots of people with rotary cutter a do it I hear.

I'm sure grease lubes slightly less well than oil, but not much. I'm also pretty sure the gearbox on my flail will still be going fine when I retire or scrap the flail here in a good few years.

John Deere corn head grease seems to be the popular solution.
