How does your garden grow?

Wife forwarded a link to me couple weeks ago about the benefits of using Epsom salts in your garden. Sprinkled just a bit at base of plants then watered in. Tomatoes and squash and purple hull peas look good.
Okra is still small and some of the leaves have white coloring. Snap beans were doing good but turned off puny and wilty. Guess Epsom salts not good for them. Probably gonna pull them up and try planting another round.

I don't know if it frosted here the other night or not. I covered my second year peach trees with towels in case it did. I probably should pull these peaches off since the trees are so young. I did prune them back and I'm just going to leave them on and see what happens.

Before I built the raised beds my garden was heavy in clay. Apparently okra does well in that. Every year when I tilled it, okra popped up all over. I didn't have to buy okra for planting for six or seven years. It was so widespread I'd have to pull it out of the rows for other plants.

REALLY late start, added we had to go with plants due to seeds due to the delay. BAD timing on our end as well as we had like 7 straight days of rain like the day AFTER we planted (as well as a tornado that hit nearby just the other day). Although we only have 4 beds up now, it's already larger than what we had in the past. 1st bed on the right is a "memorial garden" where we have our pets ashes laid, something my wife always wanted to do.

SLOWLY coming along.

Man I haven't even been able to start planting yet though I have lots o plants waiting to get in the ground soon. Its been way to wet to till and lay plastic and beside with all the wind an rain its been pretty cool temps, lucky to even make it into mid 60's most days.

Geeze first week of outdoor flower marketing cold damaged lot of the greenhouse plants. We seem to do it regular too during that first week out..we never learn it seems

Night time temps were into the low 30's on the 20th of May and there was several inches of snow on Mothers Day in the mountains around the ski area here.

Got the 500 glad bulbs in the ground about 14 days ago and they are starting to pop up now. I never seen my peas growing as slow as they are this season been more than a month now and I don't think they are eve a full 2ft high yet and of course are not flowering either

Maybe things will change some by next week

That is some big blue berry. Looks great. I love this time of the year. We have eaten squash and beans a few times and tonight had this. First time ever for me to have ripe tomatoes in May. Sweet corn, microwaved in the shuck, and Cherokee Purple tomatoes

Havent put the plants in yet but got the plastic down using my little Holland Transplanter built mulch layer...seems like I have had it forever now. Lays down 2 ft wide rolls. ALWAYS WORKED GREAT but now I am having a heck of time sourcing the 2 ft rolls.

You can still search for the threads on that here on TBN

So seems 3 ft is the minimum standard now and goes up from there to 6 ft. That's fine as long as you have that clearance between your tractor wheels but 2 ft has always worked on all the compacts under 30hp which are usually way less than a 36" wheel clearance like my JD 4100 with R4 tires has just 24". And that is just right for single row crops like eggplant peppers and staked tomatoes.. Shoot lettuce cabbage brussel sprouts, summer squash, winter squash, pumpkins, cukes, zukes it all works well.

WTF are they thinking?

I cut a 4ft roll last in half season but its very difficult so called almost every supplier I have a link for today no one would do nothing...sad state of affairs in America they way business is.

Told my boss that the way it is... so we need it for the commercial production at work I always sub out to him so I got clearance to get a new 3 footer from Earth Tools on his dime, less than $900 delivered and real nice unit though it wont work efficiently on my JD4100 I plan to use it on the JD4320 at work instead. Way overkill mulch layers don't need hp!

I'll get pictures of the new one later. It came truck freight the other day and needs to assembled and adjusted but I'm working the all weekend so its sits till next week. Gonna rain all week again anyways.

So if anybody has any links or suggestions for a 2 ft source or making one from a larger roll I am all ears

Okay flower marketing work took precedent for the last 3 days. Set up on Fri, and sales all day Saturday and Sunday. But finally got to do a whole lot of transplanting today!

Planted 75 tomatoes, 3 dz. Celebrity, 2 dz. La Roma, some heirlooms, Brandywine and Pineapple along with a couple of Sweet 100 cherry and a Grape tomato. Plus 3 of the great new TomatoBerry...so cool to look at with it strawberry shape and tastes great too!.

About 100 peppers altogether 3 dz. green bell peppers in 3 varieties Better Bell, Lady Belle, and Red Beauty. Plus 2 dz. of the sweet Italian Cubanelle pepper. Had Anahiem chili peppers this year a dozen of them. Always used to always grow them years ago when we started all our own but hard to get the plants otherwise at least it is for me. My usual Jalapeno, Hungarian Wax and Italian Hot Cherry peppers for canning but only planted 9 of each type as I most often end up with more than I can handle. Plus 3 of the Hot Portugal's for drying...again a very productive pepper.

Went with 18 brussel sprouts for this year a few more than last year I ran out of them way too soon at the end of last season only lasted until Thanksgiving or so :D

And also put in all the summer squash and zucchini plants, four of the ribbed Italian Costata Romaesco, three each of yellow zuke and two types of green zuke, three Cousa and three of the Mexican Grey.

Still need to pop in 48 Swiss Chard transplants too, but that wont take long at all. Should had done it earlier but hey I'm only one guy ;)

They had said 100% chance of rain both today and tomorrow but the was only a shower overnight and I was able to get in most everything I needed to between 9am and 2 pm today. Ha raining some now.

Either Wednesday or Thursday after the rain passes and depending how wet things are I will put in the seeds for bush string beans, I chose Provider from Harris this year, had Tendergreen from Burpee last year and they were good but Harris has the best prices.

Sunflower transplants will go in too. Infared, Sunrise Orange, Sunrise Yellow, Ring of Fire and Soraya all came up good from seed in the greenhouse but the Frilly sunflower seed that Harris sent with them in the pkg bundle had problems

After that I can set up my pole bean poles for the Romano and Rattle Snake beans and then the cukes I started can go in too. The picklers look great Sumters I think they were, but the Straight 8 most are all yellowing and some are rotting away at the stem even in the greenhouse with the lack of sun and heat. Just too wet I guess. Oh well I can get some Raiders from work they are much better cucumber anyways and wicked productive.

Then if there's is any room left we can see what else. Maybe get some lettuce transplants from work and plant some of the sugar pumpkins I started from seeds I had saved last year.

But that'll be about it! :D

Still cool only 60's and rain most all week but the forecast is for high 80's next week.

Just in time for motorcycle week!

Happily, that berry was just one of many...

WP_20170604_20_02_54_Pro.jpg

That bush is a bit over 6' tall, a bit more than 3' in diameter, is older than the average member of this site, and produces tons of very sweet and very large berries nearly a month earlier than any of my other 15 bushes. The berry pictured with the dime was actually about average for that bush. There are a few on there that would take a similar picture with a nickel.
