Loaned my wood chipper to a friend and we found out you can't get off the JD 4310 with the PTO engaged.

I won't say how we got around the problem that day but we would like to know how the people at John Deere expect you to run things like wood chippers, generators, and any number of other attachments?

There is a LOT more work for the chipper at his property and I won't be able to be there all the time.

The heading "Using Rear PTO (Operator off Seat)" in the operators manual gives the procedure.

From the manual..in two attachments continuing. Hope this helps.

If beenthere's procedure doesn't work for you:

After ensuring that the park brake is engaged & the gear is in neutral... I'd simply place a bag of cement onto the seat (use the seat-belt to keep it from sliding off due to vibration).

You can then start the tractor, bring the revs up to PTO operating speed and engage the PTO. If that doesn't work, add another bag of cement.

Thank you beenthere, we didn't have a manual but I figured there had to be a way.

Here is a link to the manual.

I don't run into the problem, because I put a jumper across the seat safety switch so the system "thinks" someone is in the seat. Without it, I cannot get off the tractor and leave it run, nor can I stand up to see just where the forks on the FEL are engaging a pallet or a log.

And again I thank you.

There is something wrong with your tractor as I can get off of my tractor to check on things. I can stand up on the tractor when it's not moving without problems. If I do stand while moving there is about a 5 second delay before the tractor shut's off. If I sit right back down it starts up again.

Mine does the same, I bought a old roller mill and was going to investigate this issue one day.

When I tried the mill, I was in gear but I believe the parking brake was set. She tried to die every time I stood up, but I was just testing the mill after I bought it. Now I know.

I lived with my seat switch for 6 months before bypassing it. Should have done it 6 months prior, now I can stand up while lining up to a pallet or backing up a trailer attached to the loader.

Invest in one of these:

We had already come up with that solution and for the day we worked it, just unplugged the safety switch.
The tractor belongs to a third party & we didn't want to "farmerize" anything on it until told to do so. :)

Unplugging it worked? Usually they closed with pressure, and open when you get off the seat.

What? It is so easy to operate correctly, I can't imagine bypassing the safety switch. I see too many maimed farmers around here to want to join up.

By-passed mine on day one (1998 sometime..) I get on and off too often to be putting up with an engine shut-down, and also have to stand to see the tips of the forks when approaching a pallet or a log on the ground. Seat switch has a jumper in the connector that causes a connect full time.
It is the owner's call to do whatever.
Only maimed farmer I've seen around here in 50 years is the one that was caught by his bull in the barnyard, and recently one who thought stepping on a tangle in his feeding auger was a good idea and it removed a foot.
But maybe for some operators, a seat safety switch is their only protection from an injury.

It's not easy if you have never seen such a set up before.
My mind doesn't work in a way that gets me injured just because I wanted to operate something like it was designed to work.
If you NEED a seat safety switch, maybe you shouldn't be operating machinery.

LOL!!!! There is always one in the crowd! I was raised on tractors that had no or very little safety equipment. I was told horror stories of people falling off and getting their legs cut off by a clipper, so I learned early to be safe. Also common sense really plays a large factor here!
