Don, the pie had very little fat in it, it was stuffed with sour cherries packed in water which I don't think have any fat in them at all.
The crust was fatty, they all are, but this was a very thin crust. It had 3/4 of a cup of sugar added (that's what I need a tasty alternative to) instead of the one
cup called for in the recipe, but other than spices, nothing else in the pie.
If I die with a piece of pie in my fork, I sure will die happy.
and the balance I talk about is avoiding all junk food, snacking on carrots, etc.
A healthier lifestyle, not the healthiest. My numbers have never been high, came off statins and stayed off them,
sugar is borderline but not over. And I understand that I have to work at it to keep them that way.
Maybe it's because I don't have kids that I take a bit more fatalistic, but hopefully not stupid, approach to this by
saying there are certain things I'm just not going to cut out entirely.
As long as other risk factors are in line, nonsmoker and minimal drinker, I'm going to try to not worry so much.
Worry can be unhealthy too. If that sounds like I'm sticking my head in the sand, sorry, it's just my sense of balance.
And if my BMI is a little high, well so be it. I have other worse physical challenges that have nothing to do with diet.
Don, your advice has been wonderful and I'm grateful for it. It really makes sense to me that a plant based diet is
healthier for us, to be herbivores. It's why I'm now barbecuing black bean veggie burgers. And I owe it to you for waking me
up to do this. I now eat more salmon and veggie burgers than beef, and eat them in a pita pocket size thing with minimal bread.
