Dealer said there are 2 different air filters depending on the serial so I was gonna get it then get the air filter. That looks like a nice solid tractor. Other than the nose piece on the hood, sheet metal looks straight and not rusted out. The 2440 was a real workhorse. You have the optional rack and pinion axles whichgives you more weight in the wheels. The 40 series utility tractors were being sold new when I started working For dealer in 1977. Set up quite a few of them and installed loaders. Your loader has 146 decals, but the lift cylinders appear to be from a 145. Can't tell on the bucket cylinders but they may be right for the 146. It will make a difference in the seal kits if that is what is leaking. You mentioned you didn't have air filters to install. TxJim didn't give you air filter numbers, so I can tell you primary filter is Ar84228 and secondary element is AE31724. It was nice back in those models. Filters interchanged over many models, now it seems every model takes a different filter and even some differences in serial number ranges or what tier emissions engine you have!?!
TxJim, You are right. I was thinking all 40 series used the dual element filter and 30 series used the AT20728. Sometimes my mind doesn't recollect as well as it did and I should have verified before posting possibly wrong info.jd110
I didn't sell enough air filters for my feeble mind to remember their part numbers unlike the part numbers I do remember. It appears the air cleaner element filter part numbers you listed are good for all 2440's after serial number 272224 which before that SN utilized a single element PN AT20728
Okay, if the middle one isn't working correctly is this a easy fix?TxJim, You are right. I was thinking all 40 series used the dual element filter and 30 series used the AT20728. Sometimes my mind doesn't recollect as well as it did and I should have verified before posting possibly wrong info.
Loganhorse, the lever between the shifter is pto clutch when you have independent pto. The pto lever on side is a sliding collar that disconnects pto shaft mechanically. It is handy to let pto turn freely when hooking up pto. You should be able to leave that one engaged and turn pto on and off with lever between shifter if it is working properly. The lever at rear axle housing is the diff lock.

Sorry for all the questions.

Yes when the foot lever is engaged it comes on. Never really paid attention to the smaller lever. I'll check shortly.Ease of repairing ind pto control between gear shift levers would depend on what's wrong with it. So will pto shaft turn with power when lever by left foot when sitting in seat is moved forward but lever between GS levers has no control of pto? If so it's possible that hyd ind clutch plates are warped. Does lever when moved between gear shift levers have ""2 distinct detented positions""?
