More people need to adopt that line of thinking. It will save a lot of grief and angst in their careers.

2X what Randy said about Kronos. We've had it for several years at our Hospital. Sign in by calling from a land line or cell, entering user id, password etc. When I started years ago we hand wrote in/out times on our time cards, by the time I retired we had Kronos for many years. The hardest thing for me was remembering to punch in. I had all the bldg keys, programmed bldg access, always got to work at least a half hour early, opened up our area, made coffee, did rounds, took care of any emergencies that may have come up during the night. Always gave them more than a days work. Very similar to your job and many times forgot to punch in. Our Kronos system was set up with time windows. We had to log in within a small window of time or it would pop up a red flag to management. Fortunately My manager would always call me and knew I was there and take care of my time card.
We went from a small hospital run by the Sisters to a multi billion dollar corporate hospital in my 31 years and I had become just a number in the system.

The way Kronos is set up the only way for staff to clock in is by a swipe or to log into a Hospital owned computer...

Now the IT guys that are regional have Hospital issued cells and they can do all functions from their cell phones and managers can remote in because they are issued a company Hospital corporate Lab Top.

My manager who has been offsite for the last 2 years since we have had no on site manager is always sending me things nights and weekends... not a problem for me as I would rather keep up to date.

Yesterday when she said nothing is really changing I said I will not be able to remote anymore... she asked who said this and I said HR... she said she does it all the time... and my reply is that she is a Regional Manager but coming March 1 I will be an hourly with none of these privileges.

If I were to put things in a nutshell... the new corp policies and corp HR are very specific which is very different than what the Hospital Administrator has been saying and on the occasion I bring something up she has had to agree with Corp saying we will work it out in the next couple of months.

Sometimes I think she is learning just as much as I am... we had worked together as peers years ago before she left and has really done well to become a regional administrator for several Hospitals and Clinics in her short 3 years with the 55,000 employee company.

At my wife's hospital they "punch in with fingerprints. Fingerprints!

The Kronos is mounted in the lounge and has a camera with a sweeping view the entire lounge... Management has assured staff the camera option is disabled....

We had Kronos in a Hotel Chain and it was removed last December... found the site manager was spending too much time on payroll problems... housekeepers and support were always having problems.

It has only been about two months but productivity has increased markedly...

Saying it's been an interesting start would be an understatement...

One thing is the first day I had 15.7 hours on the clock and less than 8 hours later I was back at work and the Time Clock had a problem with that as 8 hours had not lapsed... the managers have been spending a lot of time on corrections... some badges did not register and the trainers accidentally wiped out time of those on the clock.

IT is another story... all the deployed computers were pulled late Monday night and replaced with Thin clients... Tuesday morning it was discovered the Thin Clients were not suitable or able to perform the task in many areas so computers were put back in Tuesday night...

We have been assigned anywhere from 30 to 35 online training to complete in 7 days... none of the computers have speakers... so no audio and there are tests for each module.

The Boss has already pulled me aside and said I need to rein in my hours followed by can you work this weekend to deploy new equipment...

To those who said being hourly is better... it sure seems to be... simply put the prior week was 10 to 12 hours each day in prep but being salary I was paid the same... now, I clock in, have mandatory breaks, meal time, etc...

No one mentioned a second meal time for long shifts so I need to incorporate this going forward as I received a computer generated warning in my inbox.

Have not punched a card since I was 22 years old...

Definite shift in attitude... no one has ever said I leaving for lunch or I'm on break so whatever will have to wait... now it is heard all over the Hospital...

A delivery ran late and arrived just as the clerk went on 30 minute already pushing the 5 hours mandatory meal break window... the driver had to wait and was very upset.

I guess it is all part of growing pains and transition...

About 15% of the company left... they had completed all the requirements... drug test, physicals, immigration I9, vaccines, etc...

Most put out resume's and were picked up elsewhere and few simply chose to retire...

I can relate. We tried the Thin Client route and it did not work for us either. Changed them all out for the Lenovo mini I5 processor 4GB RAM currently on Win 7. We are going to a Citrix published desktop so now they will become a dummy terminal.
