I don't see any of the other manufacturers stepping up like Toyota did.

Toyota may be good but they aren't 'squeaky clean' in all situations. My son is stuck with a loan on a death trap Tacoma and Toyota not interested in helping whatsoever.

Yea, but in this case it's doing 100% of the work which it wasn't designed to do. The solid front axel wasn't designed to do that either, but if I'm going to push something above its limits i'd rather have the stronger one.

I wonder if they just swapped in a trans from an Eldorado/Toronado...?

I heard of a tow truck made for a parking garage like that, with an idler axle and wheel lift right behind the cab.

I'm guessing they are running it in 4wd with the back drive shaft gone. That would have been the cheapest option and it's clear the builders wanted a cheap ride.

There was also a company who made float plane transporters that were built the same way. 4WD pickup chopped behind the cab to have a 3' bed with a framework on the front and the transfer case locked into 4WD.

From your previous post it's not Toyotas fault. It's the fault of your son and the previous owner.

They should have had it inspected in the alloted time and your son should have done his homework prior to buying.

I am no Toyota fan. I owned one in the early 90's and it was good. I would buy another but have since bought 24 other vehicles since all by other manufacturers becauseToyota just didn't have what I liked.

As a father of two I would not let my children in a death trap. If it needs to be parked do so and keep your kids safe. It's not worth risking a life over a few bucks!

I'm learning something new here. I've never seen rust like some of the photos referenced here.

I've owned cars starting from '32 Chrysler Imperial (cut down into a pickup), '35 Chev and '36 Ford, '37 and 40 Chev, several '49~57 etc etc, and then more modern after I started to earn a good living. Apparently all California cars, NONE had significant rust. I guess the world is a big place and my experiences haven't prepared me for what's out there.

Nope. I spent time in TX, AZ, NM, and NC. I thought I knew... But I knew NOTHING about rust until moving to NH.

I haven't seen any other truck brand have major frame rot problems to have them do this. Like I said before Toyota did not make the frame for the Tacoma. They had trucks that were less than 5 years old that were not safe to drive.

Unrelated to towing or hauling, but related to the rust.
This truck was used as a personal plow truck until it wouldn't go anymore. It got towed into my shop to pull the plow frame to put on a better truck. I tried to pick it up, and as the rear wheels came off the ground, I heard rust and crinkly metal, so I stopped lifting. IMG_20170201_171910100_HDR.jpg

Yeah, should have swept the snow off it before lifting
