Do you have a drone?

I have the B4UFly app. We live just outside the 5 mile zone for the airport. (Some drones will not take off if they are within the 1.8 mile zone).

When I called the airport about who to call for permission to fly inside the 5 miles, they said, "We don't have anyone to answer the calls or give permission, we don't want to be in the drone-control business, we don't know what agency or agencies are responsible for enforcing the prohibition, we just don't want drones in our flight path." They were not very happy with the FAA. BTW they declined to answer by email, they called me with this info.

I fly all sorts of equipment. The attitude of the airport is understandable but wrong on many counts. They are not helping the situation and some community outreach is in order.

FWIW, I live 1 mile out of a major exclusion zone for commercial ops, and 1/4 mile out from "dedicated" military live fire and flyby ops, with a private airpark within that 1/4 mile operations zone. We all get along fine, private "drone" owners included, and have done so through rules, regulations and community outreach.

I just went back and added some "Laughing" emoticons so that everyone would understand the "paranoid" saying is a 50 year old joke......

Turns out my BIL got a Phantom IV. Here's a pic of their farm he posted.

I bought one (DJI Phantom) to take on vacation a few years ago. The novelty quickly wore off and it seemed like everyone had one. I figured they will be highly restricted in the future so i sold it and got most of my money back out of it. An impulse buy like my old dump truck that i soon regretted.

I love my drone. Used my P4 today to search for a lost bull. We knew he had to be in one of two adjacent ranches because of the fences we repaired and I was able to cover vast acreage very quickly. We found him, not with the drone, but we knew where we DIDN'T have to drive after flying.

I got one for Christmas in 2015 - over a year ago. I can't remember the brand but wife said it was over $1,000 and a very good one. I have not even taken it out of the box.

I'm the same way. Got the phantom 3 pro same xmas and flew it a few times. She got the mount for the camera (gopro) but I couldn't ever get the software to work right to set it all up. I've only flown it two/three times since I got it.

We've used ours to inspect roofs, chimney, map some old stone walls, check a sailboat mast, and a mooring field. We gave neighbors aerial shots of their houses for Christmas and a contractor pictures of the addition he built. Gave the previous owner of our NH place a shot of the house with Mt Sunapee in the background.

Priceless.

The thing with these new drones, there is NO pucker factor anymore. These things are designed to "fly" by computer.

Take me back to the old days with the cox engines, castor oil and fly by wire, or move up a notch the r/c aircraft of old and the micro-flights.

Heck, I don't even break a sweat now. No adrenaline rush.

It may gain in value. My wife and children have some Star Wars collectibles NIB from the 1980's. A USED VINTAGE STAR WARS, ESB, MILLENNIUM FALCON VEHICLE W/ BOX - 1980 is going for over $180, a NIB over $300.

People use credit cards, carry smart phones, use EZPass, and the government has drones and satellites that can gather all kinds of data about you without even knowing. Those same people get all heated up that a neighbor might fly over their house with a drone. Makes absolutely no sense to me. I've never even seen another drone other than mine.

Don't forget about using those rewards cards so they can keep track of what your buying at the grocery store and relay that info to your insurance company.

Agreed. I sometimes lament that it's so easy anyone can do it. Then I rejoice that its so easy anyone can do it. Easy to turn the controls over to a complete novice and let them have fun for a few minutes without fear. As a much younger man I've had two motorcycles returned to me all banged up by people who "knew how to ride". Drones are way to expensive to wreck them so I'm happy to fly without the rush.

I don't want one, but I "need" one..... I have no opposition to them. I see the value of their use commercially as their abilities advance.

My large farmer buddy was opposed to them on the invasion of privacy philosophy.

Then his two Sons and Son-In-Law educated him on how it can be used in their farming operation. I don't know the make/model, but it's extremely "intelligent". Can be linked into their computer system and "plot" fields. Very long fly time and range.

I've posted this before, but here's a pic they took with it.

Much more useful information than this picture my Mom took of me in 1959...... :)

I don't know man, looks like your on an 8N ford by the rear wheels. I couldn't tell you what those combines are, they're to far away! Just messing with you my friend, I like them both.

They are a luxury toy for most. I don't use mine commercially and I should pull it out more often. Garandman, I like your idea. I think I will do the same and surprise my neighbors each with and aerial shot as a gift. Or maybe I should ask them first? I would never shoot a drone down unless it was truly invasive but we all have limits.

I'll eventually buy one. What holds me back now is the technology is changing so fast. For example, if I paid $1000 for a drone today, a year from now that same technology will be $700.....

My neighbor kid has one. When it warms up I'm gonna pay him to take some aerial shots of my farm. He's 10 years old. He's all about it. :)
