Just had a sickening thought

I have a NH 3930 and I was going to hook up my utility trailer to my ball on my drawbar. I placed the drawbar and then crawled under the tractor to put the pin through the frame as I have done many times. As I was struggling to get the pin in, I had the thought that if the tire were to blow out while I was doing this, I would be a dead man.

Have never heard of a tire doing this but I am sure that it has probably happened before. Know the odds of this happening while under the tractor is very small, it still is a little scary. Wonder if I should put something under the frame in the future?

Is the trailer the only thing you use the drawbar for?

If your tractor is really low I guess it could happen. Most of them the wheel would hit the ground before you got crushed. I wouldn't worry about it to much unless you have a tube poking out the side of your tire. I would say your chances of getting hit by lightning are greater.

While it's never a bad thing to be safe, you can also think yourself into neurotic paralysis. I've never heard of a tire blowing and instantly deflating while it's just sitting there. It's possible that it has happened, but ...

What are the chances of a catastrophic tire failure like that happening while just sitting there? I'd be more worried about the vehicle (tractor or truck) rolling, which is why I don't lay in the potential path of the tires.

I have had my hydro tractor creep a little bit when I had my foot close to the front of the tire. I caught it in time but I would hate to be stuck with my foot jammed under a tire and all I have with me is a rusty jackknife.

'Risk Management' is what the OP has done and it's what we all do, mostly unconsciously, whilst performing any task. Mostly it's a "what could possibly go wrong" analysis of the situation.

You reduce the risk to the lowest possible acceptable level and then get on with the job.

Sounds like you've been some FMEA's! We have to do them at work on some of the products we manufacture. All of our products are used on railroad tracks, most of it used to control track signaling, crossing guards, track switches, and CBTC (communications based train control). A lot of that gear is considered to be "vital safety" which is critical to trains operating in a safe manner.

Anyway, back to the OP... if the rear tires are loaded, doesn't that reduce the chances of a tire blowing out? The air pressure will be lower (I think), and there is less volume of compressed air above the liquid ballast. Also, I would think that the liquid ballast would tend to help dampen out any explosion. Or am I just daydreaming here?

Over reacting or over thinking ? Perhaps so. Or perhaps ones subconscious ringing a bell that one should pay attention to ? Only you can make that decision.

I had a student who over the summer was working under his car. He was using a piece of firewood for a jackpost. The car came down and crushed him. His pregnant girlfriend found him.- Just be smart and think ahead - like not walking under the bucket, or as I used to like to do- slipping under the belly of my horse rather than walking around.

I wouldn't worry about what you are doing but I watched this video a while back and was shocked with the force a tire blowing out has.

I've thought about it but decided it wasn't a significant risk. Getting rolled over is far more likely to happen. I do set the parking brake and scotch it if it's on an incline. My tractor has enough ground clearance I'd probably be alright if it happened. Vehicles usually don't.
