There a problem in the tyranny or back end I don't know witch one. When I am driving it bucks like it's trying to go into a gear and this happens a few times but I am noticing more now. I also flipped over in this truck a few years ago! So can someone help out? I check the tyranny the fluid was to the line and I added. Some gear oil in the back diff. to.

Better get Barbara Billingsley to translate that jive!

Seriously, how about some more details. Year? Engine? Tranny? miles? etc....

Well I have an 04, FX4 4.0 Super Cab. 75,000 miles-been in the family since new. Every now and then it won't shift out of say 2nd.- rpms will hit 3000-too much throttle pressure and it will buck. I took it to dealer and they ran codes and said..."no issues". I've since learned to pull over, shut it off and restart-end of problem-until next time.

Trans fluid looks good-color and no smell.

Had a Dodge Dakota p/u at work, did the same thing. About once a month you'd have to pull over and shut it off, then it was fine.

still trying to figure out what year you said it is, but if it is EFI engine I would look at your Mass air flow sensor and TPS(throttle position sensor) signal. When you loose the tps signal the engine thinks you let off the throttle and then reengaged, same idea with the mass air flow sensor. if it is not turning on the check engine light it has to be something not throwing a code. Typically bad coil or plugs or plug wires will throw a code. May not be drive train related been down this road before. Can be hard to find after all if it ain't broke can't fix it.

Doubtful bucking is a diff issue, the diff bearing went on my son's ranger. It was loud then the rear end locked up. On the tranny side, it could do that if the torque converter was not working properly, basically lockup/unlock/lockup. Try different things like running in D3. Any other things you notice like it happens at certain rpms, temps, 10 mins after starting are examples. My Jeep used to buck like crazy 1 mile down the road from my house then after a couple mins it would be fine. No codes. It ended up being the front o2 sensor which controls fuel/air mixture. Right when it went into closed loop it would buck until the sensor warmed up a bit. It took me a month to figure out.

Good call on the TPS. Back probe with an analog voltmeter and watch the needle sweep. If it's anything but smooth as you open and close the throttle it needs replaced. If the needle drops at some point along the otherwise smooth sweep it means your computer thinks you suddenly let off the gas.

Well since I turned over there are gages that don't work now the temp gage all the others work. I'll pull over and see what that does next time.

Sounds like mine, I have 200k on it and the transmission is starting to buckle up again. My OD light comes on, and sometimes I get a check engine with code that the mechanic says "new transmission".

I had a new tranny at 100k, and doubt if she will get another. She will go until she goes no more. Not worth the cost anymore. 2007, btw.

FWIW, my last ranger ate IACs, but they showed up pretty clear with a code.

Well maybe it time for some upgrades. A 351W based smal block would be nice one or you could go all in with a big block.

I tell you the 4.0 engine for a small truck really drinks gas! It not as bad as my 20th with the 6.0 but it right up there! And the truck has less power a lot less but I hope I can get 5th out of the ranger.

What kind of mileage do you consider "really drinks gas"? I bought my 2002 Ranger 4.0L in 2004 with 36088 miles on it. I then drove it 78141 miles and averaged 18.361 mpg overall. Lots of short trips, city driving, using the A/C most of the time. Not great mileage, but not that bad either. Of course, my 2015 F150 Super Crew with the 2.7L ecoboost has so far averaged 20.836 mpg under the same driving conditions,
