After buying a 5/16 grade 43 12 ft orange chain that I cut in half to have 2- 6 footers I wanted to add to my collection, there is no where to store them on my B2650 to rig or lift things when you need to. I decided I need to fab up a heavy duty tool box to mount to 2 existing holes in the loader frame to store them. I got some 1/8" steel plate and cut it out to make a 10 1/2" long x 8" high x4" wide toolbox. This size fit nicely in the spot I wanted and was not in the way or too low to snag on something. I welded on 2 grade 8, 3/8" bolts to the back of the box to mount it using a jig I made up to make sure they were aligned perfectly. The biggest problem I had was how to mount the lid. I could not put hinges on the inside and open it towards the tractor due to things in the way. I didnt want to bolt or weld hinges on the outside because I wanted a nice clean look. I decided to make the lid pivot and swing open, with a spring in the front and a heavy duty draw hasp in the back to secure it.

Here is the toolbox on my tractor. Very happy with the way it came out and is super solid. Fun little project.

Very nice job:thumbsup:

Last week I added a chain box to my quick hitch on the BX and the week before I added a chain box to the QH on the L4240.

Thanks for the comment. It really was a fun winter project in a nice warm shop. I am going to plan out some more. Might make another box and put it on the other side for more storage. You can never have too much!!

Did you put anything as a spacer between the toolbox and the loader arm, or does the weld take up that quarter inch or whatever it is?

I used 2 3/8" flat washers between toolbox and the loader arm.

Thank you. Until a couple years ago when I retired, I had never really welded before either. I was a heavy equipment operator, so had been around it, but never really had any time on a gun. I went out and bought a Lincoln 140 amp mig welder and taught my self how to weld. One of the best ways to get some knowledge is on youtube. Jody on welding tips and tricks is an awesome place to understand what you should be doing when welding. The rest is practice and get some metal and start fabbing things up you need for your tractor. I picked up a set of 42" forks, and my next fab project is to make all of the frame for the forks. I am going to make them SQAA for my loader, and fab it so I can hook it up to my 3Pt hitch also. Now I am going to sell this welder and get a higher amp welder to do my fork project, which I have been wanting to do any way now that I know I really enjoy fabbing things up. I posted my tool box project on the other tractor forum, and have had a hard time keeping up with demand for people wanting toolboxes, which is a good problem as I enjoy it. My advice is to buy a welder and jump in!!!
