Why are tractors so under-powered?

I take my Dodge to the Cummins repair center cause Dodge has no clue when it comes to the engine. The Cummins folks always laugh: " why'd they put that million mile motor in that 200K mile truck?"

Kind of like the first 5.9 12 valve cummins in the early dodge trucks..You could wear out three or four pickups with the same motor.

They didn't make much power but they would run forever.

And get great mileage while doing it. Those are good engines.

And the new 6.7 Cummins, while being way more complex, still gets great mileage. I have taken a couple of long trips with my 2016 2500 (over 1500 miles, all highway) and have averaged 22 mpg. It has 3.42 gears. We have a 2015 3500 4x4 dually with 3.73 gears and the same trip with it will net me about 18-19 mpg. I'm impressed. I'm running stock tires, no lift kits, no mods.

Yes but you need some noise cancellation headphones though. Those engines are loud.

My grandpa was at an auction where they sold a train engine. It was supposedly a V36, 11,000 hp

A friend of mine is a ship captain for the big ocean going freighters. When he talks about the engines it is mind boggling. Some of them are a few stories tall.

So each cylinder is almost the size of a 5 gallon bucket? Pretty cool.
