Speaking of cast bullets. Is anyone here using the polymer powder coating process to coat their home made cast bullets?. I shot a lot of them back in the day, when we didn't know what was coating these bullets and we just bought them and shot them. No lube in the grooves, no leading, no (or very little smoke). I stopped shooting them because the guy raised the price to near what it cost to buy jacketed bullets at the time. But they did work. I haven't cast any bullets since I was a small boy and worked with dad on reloading. In my adult shooting career I have always bought bullets, either hard cast, or black bullets (the polymer coated ones) or traditional jacketed. So is anyone using this powder coating/heating process in their bullet production?

I only cast bullets for my cowboys guns and I shoot lubed lead in those. Copper plated bullets are cheap enough I don't bother casting for anything else.

I don't know why a 12 ga with OO buck wouldn't be as effective as anything, especially for shots under 50 yards or in brush and timber. Shooting a charging boar with a scoped rifle would take a pretty cool hand; I would prefer a snap shot with the shotgun. I would have no qualms carrying a shotgun.

I know people who have killed hogs from helicopters with shotguns.

Only reason I didn't shoot was because they took off so fast.

I shoot hogs because they are destructive to my property.

Shot placement is an important factor but not the only factor. Hit a wild hog in the tail it doesn't matter what caliber the result will be the same ... no effect. Hit a wild hog in the chest it matters what caliber ... 22LR he keeps running, .44 magnum he drops.

I was driving my TLB on my place and came upon a sow and some pigs in the road. They didn't pay me any attention and I got pretty close. They were facing away from me. I shot the sow right in the rear with a .243 w/ I think it was an 80gr bthp Remington bullet. She dropped like a rock and the pigs all ran. I got down and started walking toward her and one of the pigs started coming back to momma.
The sow was down but not dead. The shot paralyzed her hind legs. But she raised up and tried to defend that pig.

Hey Deerfan, not to take this thread off topic, but 30 years ago I used to hunt a bit at Whiskey Bay WMA. Do you ever hunt out there? There were also plenty of pigs in Pearl River WMA back in the day... I've been in Atlanta for the last 22 years!

Never hunted Whiskey Bay, but Pearl River/Honey Island Swamp several times. Honey Island Swamp was a tricky place to hunt. I hated tracking animals there, so easy to get lost. I swear every tree and bush was identical to the next one. Held the compass tight in those woods!

Back to the original subject. If I remember correctly, and I may be wrong, the second largest polar bear on record was killed by an Inuit woman with a Remington Nylon 66 22LR. If I remember the story she stood and got it with one shot between the eyes. Hmmmm, can you say 'nerves of steel' to stand there and take that shot. Correct me if I am wrong on the story because it has been a long time since I read it and the record may be surpassed by now. Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement! Hard to aim when being attacked and running.

RSKY

I have a co-worker who has since retired, dispatch a polar bear by putting the barrel in it's mouth. She's.... all of five tall and looks like the corner librarian. Should have seen the room full of tough guys with their jaws on the floor when she related that story.

Apparently the bear killed by the Indian woman was a large Grizzly not a polar bear. And the .22 single shot rifle was loaded with a .22 long. NOT even a .22 long rifle cartridge. The .22 long is more rare today, but was pretty common back then, and has less velocity and energy than a .22 long rifle of today. Apparently she put some "insurance" rounds in the bears head after that first shot also. Good idea in my opinion!

What .22 Rifle did Bella Twin use to Kill a World Record Grizzly in 1953?

I recall reading an article written by a gentleman who lived in Alaska. He story was that he lived in a fairly rural wilderness area, and there was bull moose that was hanging around his home. He wanted to run it off before his guests arrived, so he got out his .22 rifle and popped off a few shots in the direction of the moose, hoping it would leave. To his surprise, the moose dropped in its tracks and was dead when he got to it. Seems one of his shots hit the moose in the head and killed it. He said now he was stuck with a 2000 pound moose in his back yard that somehow had to be moved. Point being a .22 can be quite lethal if the placement of the shot is right.

Says right on the box of .22LR "Dangerous withing 1 1/4 miles". :)

I stand corrected! It has been a while since I read the report but would have sworn it was a Nylon 66. And I didn't know it was a long and not a long rifle. That's about 300fps less. Makes it more impressive.
