Which Orange is used on a 2012 M8540HDC ? Sorry to bring up an old topic, but, I did search and found lots of posts on paint, but no answer to this question. Thanks Gary

I would guess it would be Orange 2 being so new.
Dealer should be able to give a absolute answer.

Orange II, no question.

Orange was replaced a long time ago.

Orange II for sure.

Rustoleum "Lobster Red" is not far off, just a tiny bit too reddish. Is fine for repainting buckets and implements though.

I recently use Husqvarna orange to paint a deck. It was close enough for that, but not for a touch up on the tractor. I couldn't find lobster red. The tractor this went on was badly sun faded and just about any orange was good enough.

I used to spend a lot of time trying to find "close enough" alternate paints so I could save a couple of dollars on touching up this or that. After many years of trying, I learned that the only correct paint to use is the correct OEM factory paint. In my case, Kubota paint was not only the correct color but was a higher quality acrylic enamel but would last longer, maintain color correctly and match whatever color was already there. The close enough paint looked out of place and you could always tell where it was. We've all seen that.

By contrast, the alternate paints were often lower quality so the "savings" weren't really there. it was merely paying less for what almost always was a lower quality product. When quality and contents were compared, we were probably paying more for what we were getting than if you were comparing apples to apples rather than just initial price.

When you have a $25,000 to $50,000 tractor and save $10 or $20 on paint over the life of the tractor, that's probably not a good idea for several reason. It doesn't match, affects pride of ownership and will usually lower resale values by making the item less attractive and the buyer skeptical of other maintenance. OEM makers put their best foot forward on their paint and usually offer it at a great price to keep their products looking nice. Plus they make it proprietary in that it's an exact color that is difficult to easily copy.

Here's an example of the correct factory acrylic enamel --Orange II--paint on an insignificant item like a bucket. Look at the pop of the color and the beauty of the real McCoy.

How about a wheel or center?

IMG_5174.JPG IMG_5677.JPG

That was with a spray gun. How about a rattle can on a front axle touch up? Tractor sat outside for 14 years.

Remember, for many years I tried the alternate of Rustoleum or whatever I could get so I'm not being critical but just trying to show what has worked for me. I still use a Rustoleum color on a dirt engaging implement sometimes just because I have it or it's easier. But even then, here's the correct OEM paint on an old harrow. Look at that red pop.

Sixdogs. I surely 100 percent agree with your post. It is way to much work on the prep to not go with the correct high quality paint. I went with the Kubota paint and hardener when I painted my implements to match my new B2650.20151123_103649.jpg20151130_101654 (450x800).jpg20160403_090737.jpg

Are the bulk items a better match than the rattle cans? I used the rattle cans on some items for the new 4060 and they don't come close to matching. And yes, they are the "new" orange.

I have used the Kubota new orange rattle cans and quarts mixed for HVLP gun and they are both the same and a perfect match to my B2650. I used the rattle cans to touch up the hooks on my bucket and you can see it is a perfect match. Not sure why it is not for you if it is a new tracator and not faded.

SO,,,how much does the OEM paint cost? I know the prices vary from region to region,,even from dealer to dealer.
Just curious as to what folks are paying, so I can watch out for the "gougers". :) I get "sticker shock" just looking at the prices for "name brand" rattle cans. :)
Thanks for the replies,,, Gary

Any suggestions on a HVLP setup? Gary

Buy the (gasp) Harbor Freight higher end HVLP gun on sale. The on-sale one @ $30 is a winner and the $45-$50 better for auto quality finish. These paint guns are in most high end auto shops.

$12 to $14 for a spray can of Kubota acrylic enamel paint. Mail order from Messicks if need be. Quarts of Orange II were $42 last time around a few months ago. Way better paint and less expensive that $6 WalMart paint when all things considered. Most other brands of tractor OEM equal quality.

Now if I was just doing one shank on a cultivator, it likely will get cheapie paint because it won't matter. Full paint would be OEM and all tractor stuff always OEM.

I am just learning how to paint myself. I bought a Vaper HVLP gun with a 1.4mm tip just due to the research I had done from Auto Zone for around Fifty dollars. It had nice adjustments and performed very well.

I have seen those advertised, thanks for the "tip" (no pun intended) Gary

If I was painting one of my tractors itself, I'd use nothing but 2-part Kubota automotive paint for sure. OTOH, if I'm painting something that I'm going to drag through the dirt, $3.50 cans of Rustoleum it is!!

Incidentally, I rebuilt my BX's front mounted snowblower and painted it with Lobster Red spray bomb. The color is truly indistinguishable from my tractor when it is mounted up. Maybe if the blower panels and tractor were laying right against each other in the bright sun you could see a difference, but they aren't ever.

TSC used to carry Valspar paint and had old and new Kubota orange. They switched brands a couple of years ago (forget the name) and it is junk. Fades quickly and I even store my tractor indoors.

Last year I had to repaint my hood (don't ask why) and some other touch ups. As others have recommended on TBN I used a Rustoleum spray paint called Lobster Red. It's about $3 a can at Walmart. My tractor is 14 years old but it looks to be a good match to me. And no fading in over a year.

There's also a Rustoleum gray that is really close to the Kubota gray but I don't recall the name offhand. If anyone wants to know I can post it tomorrow.

Please post the name of the Rustoleum gray - I would like to have a few of those on hand.

BTW - it appears Walmart doesn't stock the Lobster Red any more.

von-mil, Here is a couple pics of the paint. I bought my last can of Lobster Red about 2 months ago at my local Walmart. But I see on Wally's website that there are a few colors in this Rustoleum series that you can't get from them anymore, and Lobster Red is one of them.

But Rustoleum's website shows that they still supply it. Lowes doesn't have it but HD shows you can get it from them but only in a case of 6 (free shipping to store). If you have a local hardware that stocks some Rustoleum products they might be able to order it for you.

There are times when I actually use Rustoleum "close" color paints and with great success. But before fore that, I almost always use Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. It works. And for certain ground engaging items or things that things will be for sale, I often use a different then OEM finish approach.

For example, a rusty old harrow will get half azzed brushed, washed with a stiff brush and soap and then Rusty Metal primed. Then I may spray on a Rustoleum paint that closely matches the color. I do this because it will take a lot of paint and why waste a LOT of good paint on something soon for sale or will get dragged through the dirt in 20 minutes.

After that Rustoleum color, I skim coat the item with the real McCoy OEM paint. It only takes a little bit. I may not hit all the nooks and crannies but your eye is never drawn to them and the item then looks OEM in correct color and it saves a lot of paint. I've done this for 20 or more years and no one has ever known. Well, I guess they do now.

In one instance, I was painting a 16' harrow that was to be sold. It had all sorts of parts and was going to take a lot of paint. Rather than OEM Case-IH, I got a gallon of red Rustoleum that looked close. Then I skimmed it with maybe a thinned half quart of OEM Case-IH Red. Everyone that saw it said how stunning it was. I've even skim coated smaller implements with a spray can with same end result. Anyway, it works for me.
