Good Morning! 57F @ 8:45AM. Considerable cloudiness. Occasional rain showers this afternoon. High 63F. Winds SSE at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 60%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
Only got another half inch of gentle rain yesterday, but the winds continue to gust up into the 40MPH range. No new trees down that I've seen, but I need to take another walk around today.
RNG, those bands were some of the earliest psychedelic bands.
Shhhh! Some people might get the idea I'm some kind of hippie freak or sumpthin' Kyle.
And you didn't mention anything about beer. What kind of an Oktoberfest would it be without beer? :confused2:
Thanks for sharing those pics of the turning leaves Mr. check! This was to be my weekend for leaf peeping in the Sierra, but the string of storms we've been having has probably blown them all off. Maybe next year?
Putting the backup drive into the laptop doesn't seem to have cured all the problems, as it now spontaneously reboots itself at random intervals. When I removed the bottom to do the disc swap I found that the battery had ballooned up and was putting enough pressure on the bottom cover to make it pop up about a quarter inch, so no telling what that did to the motherboard. There's a new battery on order, along with a replacement SSD, but in the mean time maybe I should pull the battery to relieve the pressure. But wait, I had to order a special three winged screwdriver to remove the screws holding the battery in place, so maybe I'll have to wait. Sheesh, they don't make things easy, do they?
I also found that when I upgraded to the latest version of the OS, the install software automatically deleted itself. I normally build an installer on a USB thumb drive, and went to do that yesterday only to find myself without a copy of the software. So when I woke up to answer Drew's muffler question

, I started the download of the 6Gb installer file. That's when I discovered the auto-reboot problem. Fortunately the downloader was able to take up where it left off, but by then network congestion had set in and I had to pause the download at 4:45AM to avoid exceeding my data caps. So I've been up most of the night as a result.
The idea of running on the backup is part of what kept me awake. If that disc fails I'll lose all my photos and music. I can re-rip the music, but the photos can't be replaced. That got me to thinking about a better backup strategy involving RAID arrays were a disc can be replaced if it fails without losing any data. So I went shopping and found out about Network Attached Storage, and ordered one. And the two 6Tb discs to fill it. And a 6Tb USB drive to back it up that I can keep in a safe deposit box. Not cheap, but you can't set a value on priceless. Since the device is accessed through the network, it'll live in the closet with the satellite modem and wireless router. That's something of a junk closet, and I'm thinking about putting it in some innocuous looking cardboard box up on the top shelf in hopes that a burglar would overlook it should one get into the house. It would also be the destination for the security camera video shot during the break in, so it would be nice if it was still here after the thief left. For that reason I should figure out how to set the security software to automatically send photos to a remote server in case of a break in. And that involves interfacing with the alarm system, and coordinating the arming/disarming of said system with the file upload conditions in the security software. Enough to make my head hurt (again).
Yesterday I got started on a scoop shaped cover for a gap between the bell housing and the engine on the van. Learned how to anneal aluminum (the plate is 1/4" thick 1100), which like copper, involves heating to a particular temperature then quenching in water. In aluminum it's roughly 650F, and that just happens to be the point at which soot burns off the plate. The soot is easy to deposit using an oxy-acetylene torch running on pure acetylene, so the annealing is easy and quick to do. And that's a good thing, because it doesn't take much hammering to work harden the 1/4" plate to the point that no matter how hard I hit it it wouldn't bend anymore unless I annealed it again. Even so, my rough attempts couldn't raise the scoop high enough, so my bodyman/neighbor will hopefully drop by sometime today to bail me out. Likely we'll put together some kind of sand or lead filled bag to beat on...
Hope everyone's Sunday is a little quieter than mine looks to be.
