I also swapped out the Ruger 10/22 stock (plastic camo) with a Hogue Overmold. That only took a few minutes, but when I pulled the action out of the camo stock, a pin (.25 diam by about 1.25 long) fell out to. I couldn't find any place it should have gone and there wasn't anything like it shown in the illustrated part breakdown. I have no idea why it was in there. The rifle seems to operate OK, but I didn't have time to shoot it. My guess, at this point, is the pin isn't part of the rifle and got left in there during assembly at Ruger. Any luck, I'll get some rounds through the rifle later today. If it functions OK, I'll just toss the pin or put it in my junk drawer...it's a black oxidized hardened pin...might be useful for something.

If I'm not mistaken, you'll find a matching pair of holes (across from each other) through the receiver low and to the rear. That pin stops the bolt from hitting the receiver during extraction, and several aftermarket suppliers have plastic replacements to soften the blow, perhaps preventing the two holes from egging out over time.

That was it!!
Thank you very much!
This pin should be a tap in fit (according to the YouTube videos I watched). It appears at least one of the through holes is at high limit or a couple tenths over.I did order a few of the replacement buffer pins.

Good Morning! 57F @ 8:45AM. Considerable cloudiness. Occasional rain showers this afternoon. High 63F. Winds SSE at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 60%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

Only got another half inch of gentle rain yesterday, but the winds continue to gust up into the 40MPH range. No new trees down that I've seen, but I need to take another walk around today.

RNG, those bands were some of the earliest psychedelic bands.

Shhhh! Some people might get the idea I'm some kind of hippie freak or sumpthin' Kyle.

And you didn't mention anything about beer. What kind of an Oktoberfest would it be without beer? :confused2:

Thanks for sharing those pics of the turning leaves Mr. check! This was to be my weekend for leaf peeping in the Sierra, but the string of storms we've been having has probably blown them all off. Maybe next year?

Putting the backup drive into the laptop doesn't seem to have cured all the problems, as it now spontaneously reboots itself at random intervals. When I removed the bottom to do the disc swap I found that the battery had ballooned up and was putting enough pressure on the bottom cover to make it pop up about a quarter inch, so no telling what that did to the motherboard. There's a new battery on order, along with a replacement SSD, but in the mean time maybe I should pull the battery to relieve the pressure. But wait, I had to order a special three winged screwdriver to remove the screws holding the battery in place, so maybe I'll have to wait. Sheesh, they don't make things easy, do they?

I also found that when I upgraded to the latest version of the OS, the install software automatically deleted itself. I normally build an installer on a USB thumb drive, and went to do that yesterday only to find myself without a copy of the software. So when I woke up to answer Drew's muffler question :), I started the download of the 6Gb installer file. That's when I discovered the auto-reboot problem. Fortunately the downloader was able to take up where it left off, but by then network congestion had set in and I had to pause the download at 4:45AM to avoid exceeding my data caps. So I've been up most of the night as a result.

The idea of running on the backup is part of what kept me awake. If that disc fails I'll lose all my photos and music. I can re-rip the music, but the photos can't be replaced. That got me to thinking about a better backup strategy involving RAID arrays were a disc can be replaced if it fails without losing any data. So I went shopping and found out about Network Attached Storage, and ordered one. And the two 6Tb discs to fill it. And a 6Tb USB drive to back it up that I can keep in a safe deposit box. Not cheap, but you can't set a value on priceless. Since the device is accessed through the network, it'll live in the closet with the satellite modem and wireless router. That's something of a junk closet, and I'm thinking about putting it in some innocuous looking cardboard box up on the top shelf in hopes that a burglar would overlook it should one get into the house. It would also be the destination for the security camera video shot during the break in, so it would be nice if it was still here after the thief left. For that reason I should figure out how to set the security software to automatically send photos to a remote server in case of a break in. And that involves interfacing with the alarm system, and coordinating the arming/disarming of said system with the file upload conditions in the security software. Enough to make my head hurt (again).

Yesterday I got started on a scoop shaped cover for a gap between the bell housing and the engine on the van. Learned how to anneal aluminum (the plate is 1/4" thick 1100), which like copper, involves heating to a particular temperature then quenching in water. In aluminum it's roughly 650F, and that just happens to be the point at which soot burns off the plate. The soot is easy to deposit using an oxy-acetylene torch running on pure acetylene, so the annealing is easy and quick to do. And that's a good thing, because it doesn't take much hammering to work harden the 1/4" plate to the point that no matter how hard I hit it it wouldn't bend anymore unless I annealed it again. Even so, my rough attempts couldn't raise the scoop high enough, so my bodyman/neighbor will hopefully drop by sometime today to bail me out. Likely we'll put together some kind of sand or lead filled bag to beat on...

Hope everyone's Sunday is a little quieter than mine looks to be.

Always happy to help out a fellow TBNer, Roy!

Back in my FFL days I used to build and sell competition grade 10/22s, mostly for the three gun guys. It wasn't unusual for those recoil buffer pins to just fall out when the receiver came out of the stock, and I always replaced them with the plastic ones to prevent that. I'd also modify the hole in the bolt release plate so that just pulling the bolt back would drop it out of engagement and let the bolt fly home, and usually put a long aluminum dowel on the mag release to make hitting that faster. Then I'd finish up by smoothing and rehardening the hammer and sear to lighten the trigger pull a bit. Sometimes I'd add an over travel screw to the trigger itself, but since it would impede function if it wasn't kept in adjustment, I tried to discourage guys from using one. High Rollers also got a Schilen or Clark fluted barrel, or one of the carbon fiber sleeved ones that were feather light. I tried to stay away from the Hogue stocks, as they were flimsy and a heavy barrel would be epoxy bedded into the forearm for stability. When I was done a rifle would stay inside a quarter inch at 50 yards with good ammo if the shooter knew how to dope the wind well.

Bups, we have 20 percent VAT on most things we buy except food. Some items like cars and the fuel to run them have higher taxes. That of course is in addition to the taxes on what we earn. Please don't ask me how much it all adds up to, it will only make me cry.

Thall303, all my life taxes have been relatively high in the UK, so it is hard for me to compare that with anywhere else. It is only when you hear of the money gathered through tax being squandered, instead of being used for the public good, that it really hurts.

RNG, have you tried something like Dropbox for an automatic back up copy of your photos and music ? I used the free trial version for quite a while before deciding to pay for even more storage. On second thoughts, as you are on satellite for broadband, maybe the data charges would make that expensive.

Not much color in the leaves yet, but we lost a lot of them in the back to back storms a couple of weeks ago, black cherry trees are nearly bare. Pretty day, low 70's after it started in the low 40's.

I like the Hogue Over mold stock...these don't feel flimsy at all. I have a few handguns with Hogue grips and always consider them an improvement. The 10/22 (the Take Down and Compact I have) are the first rifles which I've added Hogue stocks.
Always prefer wood stocks on a rifle. Other then the AR-15's I have (and the 10/22's, of course, the other rifles have the factory wood stock.

I did try a for-pay service, I think it was called Carbonite or something, and inadvertently used up my entire 10Gb data ration for the month when it automatically launched outside the 12AM-5AM data cap free window. Had to beg on my knees to get the provider at the time (Hughes) to take pity on me and lift the bandwidth restriction for the rest of the billing period, which was about the same speed as a 28.8 modem. Since then I've switched providers and now can purchase more data at $10/1Gb, but that's a pretty steep fee. I'd also like to start keeping my movie/videos on a server so I can access them via AppleTV instead of DVD, and 6Tb will cover the ones I have now and leave plenty of room for expansion. Each movie is about 6Gb, and if last night's performance is any indication, would take several days to load to a network based "cloud" server over the satellite link. So from that perspective it's not really a cost issue as much as it is a network performance issue. Perhaps with the roll out of 5G cellular service, or one of the new high bandwidth radio based protocols, reception will get good enough here that I can switch. But for now I think I'm pretty much stuck with sneakernet and a NAS for backup.:(

RNG, I haven't heard "sneaker net " in 20 years! At one time it was the net....

Split and stacked wood yesterday with my wife. 4 hours, we got a lot done, but have more to do. Wife and I are a good team, no drama. Today, I stacked the dryer on the washer, I am changing the laundry room around, and changing the water softener. So the plumbing adventure starts tomorrow. I've taken to refer to projects as "Adventures" as in Adventures in plumbing, or adventures in electricity. That way when things go sideways, its all part of the adventure! :)
