JD 336 square baler sheer pin

I am just curious as to why you think they put the slip clutch on the baler. With your reasoning there should only be the shear pin.

I have not had a chance to look at it. When I do I will let you know.

I always thought they put a slip clutch in there because if there is a failure they didn't have to replace a shear bolt, just fix the problem and go on your way.

The shear pin unloads the angular momentun from the right angle drive bevel gears. The slip clutch unloads the tractor's drive torque from the gearbox. Otherwise, you would break gear teeth, fracture the gearbox casting, and/or break the tractor driveline.

Driveshaft powers slip clutch which powers baler while shear bolt only powers flywheel.

To clarify the the slip clutch powers the whole baler as does the shear pin. Shear pin is in place to prevent catastrophic failure in case of something going out of time or a blockage beyond balers capacity.

Sorry but you made an incorrect statement. On JD sq balers since 14T was introduced if slip clutch is stuck or tightened too tight baler one can bale hay with flywheel shear bolt sheared,absent or even with no flywheel. DISCLAIMER: baling hay with FW shear bolt sheared or absent will put undue stress on driveline & tractor pto.
