I worked for years with two regular snatch blocks that cost
about $50 a piece and I still use them along with the self release block.

What kind of snatch block do you get for $50? I made my own to work with my 3/8" cables.
It has a 3/4" diameter axle, a 4" steel wheel, and 1/8" steel sides. The axle bearing is
a plain one, made of bearing-bronze.

Problem is, whenever these big fir trees get cut or fall, they go into the swale or creek.

SR I apologize for my sarcastic comment. I just don't believe that taking that picture has much significance in the survival probability of that nest. From my younger days working a trap line I know that leaving human scent around a trap set almost assures you of failure if you are after fur bearers. Again I apologize - I should have just let it slide because I admit that often us humans go to far in our quest to enjoy nature. gg
I agreed with your comment. Usually animals run from human sent not follow.

On the one hand, we have the opinion that human scent will attract predators to a turkey nest.
On the other hand, we have the opinion that human scent will repel predators from a trap.

Well, fellers.... which one is it? We seem to have a multitude of wildlife, both prey and predators within spitting distance of our house. There's bird nests that we frequent to check on the babies. There's a bird feeder with my smell all over it that gets emptied by birds and mammals daily. There's a groundhog hole that I stomp over daily about 5' from a fox den. There's deer all over my garden where I spend considerable time. The coyote comes through and sniffs all around our house..... if I mow a trail on a Monday and my kids and her friends run cross country on sweating all over it for a couple hours, by Tuesday its trampled by deer and turkeys and coyotes. While I have seen a buck turn and run when it got scent of me, I have seen more deer come right up to my equipment and house and sniff it up and down. Is it really that big of a deal to look at a turkey nest? I don't think so.

I only relate what I've observed with my own experiences and post them here, if no one believes me, I really don't care...

There's a large degree of regional variation in animal behaviors (outside humans).

I can't get a coyote to come in to a distressed animal call, but they'll follow me around the woods while hunting (I've caught them on trail cam doing it), and they'll respond back to a locator call - but only at night.

I have a couple of those. Planning to use them this summer on my
firewood.

Mixed reviews on the HarborFright website on these snatch blocks. The wheel seems to get
pinched when using it.

Anyway, pix don't really show how big it is. What is the diameter of the axle? The wheel?

I have made mine so the hook end is fixed and the axle is easily removed to insert the
cable. Both ways work, but they need to be heavy-duty. A hollow axle sure looks weak.

I have an 8-ft diameter stump I want to pull over this week.
