Primitive but effective mousetrap

Oh, I almost forgot this. Before the new feeder showed up, I pulled the old one out of the coop every night and stuck it in another covered metal can.

One other thing I like about the new feeder is it is right next to the door into the coop, I don't have to climb in to fuss with it, just reach in, flip the top up and fill.

Killed 6 rats last night with my pellet rifle. Kind of fun but being out there and seeing how many I actually have tells me I have to put out poison to get them under control. No dead rat on my electric zapper so maybe 2 was the learning curve on that. My dogs are isolated from the coop and barn with an invisible electric fence. So hoping that if I am vigilant scouting for dead ones they will be Ok. I have no cats and seldom see any around. Any dead rats I find I will dispose of so hopefully no collateral damage. Will try and shoot some more tonight and will put out poison.

There is an old saying about "they breed like rats". Keep shooting!

I have heard that when mice eat the poison they will seek water and so generally they go outside to die. Is that true?

With the number of stories about poisoned mice dying in walls and stinking the house up, I don't think its a proven story.

I haven't used mouse poison in many years, but most of the little D-con eaters always seemed to die indoors and stink up the place.. Traps or other methods were much more sanitary for me.. And now that we have cats.. I don't see rats or mice. At least not live ones. When they get into the garage their life expectancy is very short.:mouse:awprint::cat::cat:

Victor traps work well. I have found that the peanut butter doesn't work as well as American cheese slices. They love it.

The electric trap works but I think they are more afraid of going inside them. I've only caught a few that way.

The spin into bucket is really good for mice but a rat can jump out of a 5 gal bucket.

Cats work but they come with their own problems.

I've use 1 gallon ice cream buckets with a ramp on 1 side. I put about 1-2 inches of gear lube in the bottom. They seem to love the smell of it and jump in. Then its like a mini La Brea Tar Pit.
